Cooperatives have always known that this
view was false. From the very foundation of
the Cooperative movement, they have stood
for a different set of values. Cooperatives have
always taken a stand against the ‘common
sense’ of the powers that be and have done
business by standing for the things that really
matter. For us, it is good business to be doing
good through our business.
But traditions must be kept alive. It’s not
enough for us to simply rest on hundreds of
years of making a difference. Every one of
our colleagues has new decisions to make
every day and making those decisions for
good is the way we make an impact for good.
That’s the only way good has ever been done –
by thousands of little acts every day.

The prevailing narrative in Western capitalism
is not that business decisions are generally
unethical, but rather than business is a nonethical space – where good business sense is
simply to do what makes most economic or
financial sense with the information at hand.
So doing good business should come naturally
to us. We have a strong heritage and tradition
of doing business well and doing good by
our members, our local communities, or
colleagues, our partners in business and the
natural environment which sustains us all.

How we will be equipping our
people to think and act ethically.
So, we will be training all our colleagues, from
the newest starter to the longest serving
employee on what it means to be an ethical
business and how they can use the Ethical
Decision-Making Tool every day to make
life better for members, for colleagues, for
communities, for partners and for the planet.
