Palestinian Boy
of the sea
by Somaia Shahin
A boy looked out to the sea and the ship masts
Hoping, wanting, and desperately needing
To ride the waves, away from the bomb blasts
To forget the faces he saw, bleeding
Tired from picking through trash, at the mercy of the sun9s light
Coming home through the rubble, wanting to just sleep another night
Wanting to close his eyes, to dream of being a kid
And not someone who hid when bombs sent fright through his family
He asked himself, what did I deserve hauling boxes? Collecting garbage?
Just to keep his family from illness, from passing away
And there was still no deociency in the people9s carnage
And the death toll climbs higher every day
