Starg
I am in the middle of reading Harry
Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
when I hear my older sister whisper,
“Allie.” I look up and see her kneeling
at the zipper of the tent with her
flashlight.
“What is it, Syrena?” I ask, squinting
my eyes at the shining blaze of light.
“Come with me,” Syrena says, “Down
to the dock…The stars are beautiful.”
Seeing the pleading and sadness
in her eyes, I know this isn’t about
seeing the stars.
“Okay,” I agree. “What about Grace?”
I say pointing over at our little sister
who’s sound asleep, her blonde curly
hair splayed across the mattress next
to mine. Syrena shakes her head,
“No, it’s okay. Just you.”
I shrug and try not to step over Grace
as I climb out of the tent. We don’t
say anything as we walk towards the
water. The grass beneath our feet is
wet with dew, but I don’t mind. I slip

off my sandals and step onto the dock,
following Syrena to the end where
we both lay down. The dock still feels
warm from the sun beating down on
it today. We both lay there silently
looking up at the constellations in the
stars. Finally, I say,
“So…I’m going to miss you.” I turn my
head to look at Syrena.
