Pertaining to the suspicious
absence of cherry-pits from
my August garden
by Ness Schattman
He’s a Sparrow on a Cherry and his eyes are full of mirth,
for he knows his wings are light and swift, mine heavy as the earth
and he pecks a pit asunder, full of smugness, full of wonder:
white-spray Yarrow, red-bead Berries, and he knows his every worth.
He’s a Sparrow on a Cherry, and his wings are ruffled brown
and perhaps he’ll meet a Lady-Sparrow by the Sparrow-Town,
then he’ll take her to the garden, bow his head and beg my pardon:
white-spray Yarrow, red-bead Berries, they’ll partake a teatime round.
He’s a Sparrow on a Cherry, lively-shaped and jewel-eyed,
and he gazes on his fruit-tree with a careless sort of pride
there upon his greenleaf aisle, he alights and thinks awhile:
white-spray Yarrow, red-bead Berries then he flits off, satisfied.
