"The owls know your secrets, boy.= He
would be dragged back inside, sent back to
bed. All he wanted was to be out in the
night.
He saw them, once, the owls. They
perched on the tree outside his window.
Watching him, unblinking.
The owls knew his secrets.
Crows mean death, child.
Once, years after the first warning, she saw
a gathering of them in the tree of her
neighbour's house. She smiled when she
saw them. They were beautiful, in a way,
the collection of them on the bare tree
looking like extraordinary leaves.
