An urgent and fascinating documentary. Even if you belong
to the choir it’s preaching to, it has the rare distinction of
being a film you can agree and argue with at the same
time. I.F. Stone, a trend-setting investigative journalist, was
highly influential through his self-published newsletter, I.F.
Stone’s Weekly. He tweaked and railed against the sins of
the U.S. government and the mainstream media. Stone
didn’t call government officials, and wasn’t even
accredited to attend a White House press conference.
Instead, he went into back rooms and pored through
documents and transcripts to learn what was really going
on. In the film, Michael Moore compares Stone to Toto in
The Wizard of Oz, tugging back the curtain to reveal the
power elite hiding behind their image of authority. The film
is mostly devoted to the pluck and courage of his presentday inheritors such as Laura Poitras, Amy Goodman, Glenn
Greenwald among others – all of whom are carrying on the
tradition of renegade muckraking that Stone almost
single-handedly put on the map in the postwar era.
Director Fred Peabody, whose film The Corporate Coup
D’Etat was shown at VTIFF in 2020, succeeds in creating a
lively film that suggests that I.F. Stone’s kind of fearless
reporting has not disappeared but may be gaining traction.

ANATOMY OF A FALL
(ANATOMIE D’UNE CHUTE)
Directed by Matt Day and Ned Castle
USA | 2023 | Documentary | 94 min | English
Directed by Justine Triet
France | 2023 | Fiction | 152 min | French w/subtitles

Note: In 2021, VTIFF hosted a work-in-progress of this film,
the filmmakers soliciting feedback from our audience. Two
years later, we’re proud to present the finished film after its
premiere earlier this year at the Tribeca Film Festival.
All You Hear is Noise centers the stories of three people
navigating life with intellectual and developmental
disabilities (I/DD). Trent Hampton, Melanie Holmes, and
Chris Wines travel to the United Arab Emirates to compete
in the Special Olympics World Games, an inclusive and
progressive environment for them to be in, but upon
returning home are reminded of the struggles they face in
their daily lives, including barriers to employment,
relationships, and more. While the story is built around an
athletic journey, the messaging of the film subverts the
tropes (e.g. inspiration porn, supercrip, etc.) that dominate
representation of people with I/DD in the media –
especially in conjunction with storytelling around the
Special Olympics. ~OY

Director Justine Triet’s Anatomy of a Fall is an explosive
family drama disguised as a courtroom procedural. In a
snowy, isolated cabin in the Alps, a couple – husband
Samuel (Samuel Theis) and wife Sandra (Sandra Huller)
– live with their blind son. When the husband turns up
dead, Sandra is suspected of his murder…and their son is
the only witness. From that bare premise, a plot of
enormous complexity begins to slowly unpeel itself, calling
into question the very nature of truth and marriage itself.
Gorgeously photographed and scripted, Triet’s film creates
an atmosphere of crushing intensity, and Huller towers
over the proceedings, giving one of the best screen
performances in recent memory. ~SM
