A mile of traditional and
modern seaside fun draws in
millions of visitors a year.
Enjoying historic piers full of attractions and
activities, the exciting rides of the famous
Pleasure Beach, the renowned Hippodrome
Circus, arcades, crazy golf and gold-standard
swimming and facilities at the Marina Centre,
people keep Great Yarmouth’s Golden Mile
buzzing from day to night, when the eyecatching lighting illuminates the stretch.
As popular as ever to view the mile in its
full splendour, are the famous horse-drawn
landaus, which have carried generations of
visitors. The rides are a treat for children and
adults alike, just like the modern version, the
seafront train, which runs regularly along
the length of the seafront. Or see the beach
from a di昀昀erent angle on a donkey ride.
Entire days can be whiled away playing
adventure golf, taking in the panoramic
views from the big wheel, exploring famous
sights in miniature at the famous Merrivale
Model Village, where even secret street
artist Banksy left his mark, venturing into the
deep with sea creatures at Sea Life Great
Yarmouth and resting tired legs watching a
昀椀lm at the cinema.
If the sea is too nippy for a dip, the landmark
Marina Centre, which reopened in 2023,
o昀昀ers a swimming pool, gym, café and a
climbing wall, while a stone’s throw away is
the spectacular circular Hippodrome Circus,
the last remaining Victorian circus in the
country. You will also 昀椀nd ten-pin bowling,
fairground rides, gardens, restaurants,
tearooms, pubs and so much more.
A top tip is to look up - there’s always a
surprise of unusual architecture in the mix of
multistorey buildings along the Golden Mile.
For motor fanatics, the golden Mile is turned
into a massive Wheels Festival in June when
60,000 昀氀ock to see the line-up of more
than 900 cars and 650 bikes, from classic to
sporty and quirky creations.
The restored Venetian Waterways, north of
the Britannia Pier, provides a haven of peace
from the high-octane fun and 昀椀zz. It is a
renovation of the original 1928 waterways
and its boating lake is the last of its kind
in the region. A popular haven for ducks
and heron, it is a must visit. You can stroll
through its ornamental gardens, beside its
‘canals’ and islands, and take out a boat on
its boating lake before a hot chocolate at its
café watching the world go by right beside
the beach.
