ORMESBY
CAISTER-ON-SEA
Ormesby St Michael is a tiny
village at the furthest edge of
the unique Trinity Broads,
situated between Ormesby
Broad to the north and Ormesby
Little Broad to the south, both
part of the Trinity Broads.
Another old 昀椀shing village
seaside resort and now busy
holiday destination, Caister’s
history also dates back to Roman
times with a fort built around AD
200 as a base for a unit of the
Roman army and navy.
The Site of Special Scienti昀椀c
Interests in all the broads are
areas rich in birdlife and natural
beauty. Carefully regulated
sailing, boating and 昀椀shing are
allowed, respecting the natural
environment.
The name ‘Caister’ derives from
the Anglo-Saxon word ‘ceaster’
meaning ‘Roman fort’.
Ormesby St. Margaret is built
around two large village greens
and has a medieval church.
MARTHAM
Martham’s large village green
has examples of 昀椀ne Georgian
houses, a duck pond and a
selection of shops, pubs and
restaurants.
Nearby is Martham Broad with a
140-acre nature reserve, which
is well worth exploring.
Caister has a rich o昀昀shore
lifeboat history dating back
to 1791 and operates an
independent lifeboat today.
ST OLAVES
On the banks of the River
Waveney, St Olaves is a
great place to explore the
beautiful Broads.
The remains of a 13th-century
Augustinian priory, St. Olaves
Priory, include parts of the
refectory, cloisters, and the
