WHAT CAUSES A UTI?
Urinary tract infections are caused by
microorganisms, usually bacteria, that overcome
the body’s defenses in the urinary tract. More
than 90% of bladder infections are caused by E.
coli, a bacterium normally found in the intestines.
Almost 30% of women will have some sort of
urinary tract infection this year. Nearly half the
women in the world will have a UTI by the age of
30. Men are also susceptible, and the risk of UTI
tends to increase with age.
