What is a Department Onboarding Buddy?
A buddy is someone who partners with a new employee during his or her first three months of
employment. He or she is a colleague assigned to assist the new hire to get through the first nervewracking time period of being in a new position. A Buddy provides insight into the day-to-day
activities of the department and is there to help the new employee fit in more quickly. Typically, a
Buddy would make him- or herself available to show the new hire around the office, go over
procedures and policies, and generally help the new hire become familiar with the company's inner
workings and culture.
Why have a Buddy?
A Buddy helps welcome a new employee and reaffirm his/her decision to join USC. A Buddy is a
reliable, motivated, single point-of-contact for new employees. A Buddy is beneficial because:
• Helps a new employee build on the knowledge obtained in the New Employee Orientation and
Department Orientation
• Enables a new employee to become knowledgeable about department practices and organizational
culture in a shorter period
• Helps reduce new employee’s initial confusion and uncertainty
• Increase new employee’s self-confidence allowing him/her to focus on adding value to the
organization
• Maximize the productivity of manager/new employee meetings by allowing them to focus on jobspecific issues
