Day Two – (First Day with the Department) Checklist
Instructions: Use this checklist to ensure your new employee receives everything he/she needs to be
successful in your department.
Important Note: The assigned Buddy may help in checking off some of these checkboxes.
Upon arriving, welcome your new employee, introduce yourself, and introduce your new
employee to team members (ask what name the new employee prefers to goes by).
Conduct a first day meeting with your new employee.

Schedule a day to have lunch with your new employee, and invite him/ her.
Review the job description. Explain specific responsibilities and evaluation
format and process (as applicable).
Discuss your expectations. Explain in what ways they will be expected to contribute.
Provide names of team members and a department organizational chart.
Provide other materials that you have collected in the employee’s folder.
Discuss the department’s mission and goals.
Describe who the department’s customers are as well as who supports the department.
Discuss the new employee’s work hours, the department’s office hours,
lunch hour, break times, and overtime policy/procedures (if applicable).
Address departmental dress code and any other department-specific policies.
Provide names of who to call when ill or late reporting to work, including any necessary
forms.
Describe emergency procedures, point out emergency exits, and identify building
deputies.
Provide the new employee’s schedule of activities, first assignments, and training
requirements.
Ask about your new employee’s work style, communication preferences, areas of
strengths and weaknesses, and career objectives.
Leave time for any additional questions your new employee might have.
Give your new employee a tour of your facilities. This tour should include where your
new employee can find supplies, coffee, restrooms, the cafeteria, and exits.
