K9 Trials Return to Hillsboro Stadium
On Saturday, May 21st, 2022, the Washington
County Sheriff’s Office, in partnership with the
Sheriff’s Office Foundation, held the 15th Annual
Washington County K9 Trials at Hillsboro Stadium.
This historically annual event is Oregon’s premier
police K9 competition, where K9 units from
throughout the region compete for the coveted
prize of “Top Dog.” The event was postponed
for two years due to COVID-19 health and safety
regulations.
This free, family-friendly event is an excellent
opportunity for the public to connect with local
public safety agencies and learn about the talented
K9 units protecting our communities. Competition
events include area search, agility course, suspect
apprehension, fastest dog, and handler protection.
Gold, silver, and bronze medals are awarded to the
top three dogs of each event based on the fastest
times. The “Top Dog” designation is awarded to the
overall winner based on a point system for each
event and in 2022 WCSO’s K9 Bolo won the honor of
Top Dog.
K9 Stark Retires After 10 Years of Service
Stark and his partner Cpl. Akin have worked
together for over 10 years and have an agency
record-setting 320 captures. Stark earned the Top
Dog Award at the 2014 Washington County K9 Trials
and always brought a bit of fun to shift with his
festive-themed costumes. This real-life Iron Man had
an unstoppable career — he recovered from double
knee surgery in 2017 and returned to work, keeping
Washington County safe. Stark loved to work; his
favorite job was coming to work each night with
Cpl. Akin. He now enjoys his well-earned retirement
with the Akin family.
