CALLED UPON TO EXPECT
THE UNEXPECTED
Community rallies to support deputy injured in the line of duty
Deputies responded to 98,545 calls in 2022. Working 24/7 to help protect
our community, it is challenging for a deputy to know beforehand what
each call may need or involve. As they drive to the call, they receive
information from dispatch, and then the deputy is responsible for
resolving the call safely. While many calls for service are relatively easy to
navigate, some can be incredibly dangerous.
Just after midnight on April 27, 2022, Deputy Mike Trotter was on his
way to respond to a call for service when a driver drove through a red
light and struck his patrol vehicle at a very high rate of speed at the
intersection of SW Tualatin Valley Highway and SW Murray Blvd.
This horrific crash deeply impacted our community. Deputy Mike
Trotter was critically injured. The five occupants of the other vehicle also
sustained devastating outcomes - two local high school students lost
their lives, and the other three were rushed to area hospitals.
Deputy Trotter was extracted from his vehicle by Firefighters and
Paramedics from Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue and rushed to a local
hospital by Metro West Ambulance-Hillsboro.
When Deputy Trotter arrived at the hospital, medical staff began working
to save his life. Within the first few hours of caring for him, the medical
team used 90 units of blood products on Deputy Trotter to help revive
him. Ninety units of blood are nearly nine times the amount of blood in
the average adult.
During the summer of 2022, Deputy Trotter, his family, and the
Washington County Sheriff’s Office organized a blood drive in
partnership with Bloodworks Northwest to help give back to others.
Friends, family, and community members were invited to donate blood
and use Donor Code 5453 (Deputy Trotter’s call sign).
Thank you to our community for your continued care and support of the
Trotter family.
