The John Jay French house, built in 1845,
is one of the oldest surviving houses in
Beaumont. The historic pioneer settlement,
built by John Jay French, tanner and
merchant, is filled with antique furnishings
and artifacts.

This beautiful home, dating back to 1906, is
one of the oldest landmarks in the city and is
on the National Register of Historic Places.
The wide wrap-around porch offers a view
of maritime traffic on the Gulf. Tours by

POMPEIIAN VILLA

In 1900, this modest 10-room “cottage”
was built for Isaac Ellwood, “the barbed
wire King,” as an authentic copy of a pink
Pompeiian home of 74 AD. Rooms are built
around a traditional Roman peristyle, a
three-sided courtyard to which each room
has access. Tours by appointment only.

GATES MEMORIAL LIBRARY
1149 Pearl St, Beaumont
This two-story, Classical Revival library was built
in 1917 in honor of one of the city’s founders, John
“Bet A Million” Gates, and sits on the Lamar State
College Port Arthur campus.
