Dogs and cats break down proteins into amino acids. Amino acids provide energy, build
and maintain muscle, and play important roles in digestion, immune function and fluid
balance. Without sufficient amino acids, pets can experience stunted growth, immune system
dysfunction, fluid imbalance and muscle wasting.
Of the 20 different amino acids used by dogs and cats, 10 are considered essential for
dogs and 11 are considered essential for cats. These amino acids cannot be produced
by the body, so they must be provided in the diet.13
The more digestible a protein is, and the higher percentage of essential amino acids that
make up that protein, the higher its biological value.
• Animal proteins tend to be more digestible than plant proteins, as plant-based fiber
and carbohydrates decrease digestion.14
• Animal proteins contain the full array of essential amino acids for dogs and cats and
provide more essential amino acids than plant-based proteins, including those amino
acids involved in appetite control.15
VETERINARY HPM® Spay & Neuter Diets are intentionally formulated with a focus on protein
inclusion, including a minimum of 84% of the protein sourced from animal origin.
• Protein intake results in hormonal changes that suppress appetite and result in
decreased food intake16
• Diets higher in protein result in a greater caloric expenditure at rest12
• After weight loss, higher protein diets may help maintain an appropriate weight9
