able to drink from the bitter cup of suffering I
am about to drink?”
“Oh yes,” they replied, “we are able!”
23 Jesus told them, “You will indeed drink
from my bitter cup. But I have no right to say
who will sit on my right or my left. My Father
has prepared those places for the ones he has
chosen.”
24 When the ten other disciples heard what
James and John had asked, they were indignant. 25 But Jesus called them together and
said, “You know that the rulers in this world
lord it over their people, and officials flaunt
their authority over those under them. 26 But
among you it will be different. Whoever wants
to be a leader among you must be your servant, 27 and whoever wants to be first among
you must become your slave. 28 For even the
Son of Man came not to be served but to serve
others and to give his life as a ransom for
many.”

20:2 Greek a denarius, the payment for a full day’s labor;
similarly in 20:9, 10, 13. 20:18 “Son of Man” is a title Jesus used
for himself. 20:19 Greek the Gentiles.

PSALM 25:1‑15*
7
Do not remember the rebellious sins of
my youth.
Remember me in the light of your
unfailing love,
for you are merciful, O Lord.
8
The Lord is good and does what is right;
he shows the proper path to those who
go astray.
He leads the humble in doing right,
teaching them his way.
The Lord leads with unfailing love and
faithfulness
all who keep his covenant and obey his
demands.

O Lord, I give my life to you.
I trust in you, my God!
Do not let me be disgraced,
or let my enemies rejoice in my defeat.
No one who trusts in you will ever be
disgraced,
but disgrace comes to those who try
to deceive others.
Show me the right path, O Lord;
point out the road for me to follow.
Lead me by your truth and teach me,
for you are the God who saves me.
All day long I put my hope in you.
Remember, O Lord, your compassion
and unfailing love,
which you have shown from long
ages past.
For the honor of your name, O Lord,
forgive my many, many sins.
Who are those who fear the Lord?
He will show them the path they should
choose.
They will live in prosperity,
and their children will inherit the land.
The Lord is a friend to those who fear him.
He teaches them his covenant.
My eyes are always on the Lord,
for he rescues me from the traps of my
enemies.
25 This psalm is a Hebrew acrostic poem; each verse begins with
a successive letter of the Hebrew alphabet.

Take a lesson from the ants, you lazybones.
Learn from their ways and become wise!
Though they have no prince
or governor or ruler to make them work,
they labor hard all summer,
gathering food for the winter.
But you, lazybones, how long will you sleep?
When will you wake up?
A little extra sleep, a little more slumber,
a little folding of the hands to r est—
then poverty will pounce on you like
a bandit;
scarcity will attack you like an armed
robber.
E V E R S I N C E T H E FA L L O F M A N K I N D , God has witnessed and allowed atrocities on
earth. Even by his own hand, most of humanity drowned in a flood. We cannot fully
understand this. God has allowed great sin and suffering, but he also has answered it.
He allowed Pharaoh to kill Hebrew sons, the mothers and families devastated. And here,
Pharaoh is about to get a dose of his own medicine: His people will suffer horrors such
as he had inflicted. In time, there came the long-awaited ultimate answer to sin and
suffering. A provision so vast, again, we cannot fully comprehend. It is Jesus, the Messiah.
