Why are the nations so angry?
Why do they waste their time with futile
plans?
The kings of the earth prepare for battle;
the rulers plot together
against the Lord
and against his anointed one.
“Let us break their chains,” they cry,
“and free ourselves from slavery to God.”
But the one who rules in heaven laughs.
The Lord scoffs at them.
Then in anger he rebukes them,
terrifying them with his fierce fury.
For the Lord declares, “I have placed my
chosen king on the throne
in Jerusalem,* on my holy mountain.”
The king proclaims the Lord’s decree:
“The Lord said to me, ‘You are my son.*
Today I have become your Father.*
Only ask, and I will give you the nations as
your inheritance,

the whole earth as your possession.
You will break* them with an iron rod
and smash them like clay pots.’”
Now then, you kings, act wisely!
Be warned, you rulers of the earth!
Serve the Lord with reverent fear,
and rejoice with trembling.
Submit to God’s royal son,* or he will
become angry,
and you will be destroyed in the midst
of all your a ctivities—
for his anger flares up in an instant.
But what joy for all who take refuge
in him!

Fear of the Lord is the foundation of true
knowledge,
but fools despise wisdom and discipline.
My child,* listen when your father
corrects you.
Don’t neglect your mother’s instruction.
What you learn from them will crown you
with grace
and be a chain of honor around your
neck.
1:8 Hebrew My son; also in 1:10, 15.
BUILDING A LARGE BOAT wasn’t on Noah’s to-do list. But once God
handed Noah blueprints, boat building became Noah’s top priority.
Noah’s response to God was one of faithful obedience. He listened to
what God said and then did what God asked of him. • LORD, I PRAY
for my brothers and sisters who suffer for being your witnesses. In
the midst of persecution, may they hear your voice and respond with
obedience, doing what you call them to do even if obedience comes
at a high cost. Amen.
GENESIS 5:1–7:24
This is the written account of the descendants
of Adam. When God created human beings,*
he made them to be like himself. 2 He created
them male and female, and he blessed them
and called them “human.”
3 When Adam was 130 years old, he became
the father of a son who was just like
him—in his very image. He named his son
Seth. 4 After the birth of Seth, Adam lived
another 800 years, and he had other sons
and daughters. 5 Adam lived 930 years, and
then he died.
