symbolic language similar to dreams and visions. Most biblical oracles
are found within larger collections from the same prophet; however, the
book of Obadiah consists of a single oracle.
• Poetic dialogue. Utilized in a number of ancient writings, poetic dialogue is a conversation in which each participant speaks in a form of
poetry. In the Bible, this genre is found only in the book of Job.
Reading the Bible well starts with recognizing and then honoring each
book’s genre. Following this practice will help prevent mistakes in interpretation and allow us to discover the meaning that the Bible’s creators
originally intended.
