Can I work too hard? How do I balance work and family?

• E C C L E S I A S T E S 5 :3 | Too much activity gives you restless dreams.
While we are called to work hard, we must make sure that our work doesn’t so preoccupy
us that we endanger our health, our relationships, or our time with God.
• A C T S 1 6 :1 6 | She earned a lot of money for her masters by telling fortunes.
We must make sure that we don’t allow our work to compromise our values.
• E X O DU S 1 6 :2 3 | “This is what the Lord commanded: Tomorrow will be a day of
complete rest.”
• MA R K 6 :3 1 | Then Jesus said, “Let’s go off by ourselves to a quiet place and rest awhile.”
There is a time to stop our work in order to rest, to celebrate, and to worship God.
Should Christians care how productive they are at work or in business?
• PR O V E R B S 1 2 :1 1 | A hard worker has plenty of food, but a person who chases fantasies

I’m a stay-at-home mom. How can God be glorified in my work?
• 1 C O R I NT H I A NS 1 0 :3 1 | So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the
glory of God.
Whatever job God has called us to do, we are to do it with excellence and commitment,
because we serve a God of excellence and commitment.
I’m a working mother. What does God think about this?
• G E NE S I S 2 :2 , 1 5 | On the seventh day God had finished his work of creation, so he rested
from all his work. . . . The Lord God placed the man in the Garden of Eden to tend and
watch over it.
Our work is anchored in God’s very character; part of being made in his image is sharing
the industrious and creative aspects of his nature.
• 2 T H E S S A L O NI A NS 3 :8 | We never accepted food from anyone without paying for it. We
worked hard day and night so we would not be a burden to any of you.
Christians are exhorted to work hard at whatever they do.
• C O L O S S I A NS 3 :2 3 | Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for
the Lord rather than for people.
The way we approach work is evidence of our relationship to Christ.
Is it possible to work your way into heaven?
• E C C L E S I A S T E S 2 :1 1 | But as I looked at everything I had worked so hard to accomplish,
it was all so meaningless.
Although we are to work hard, work by itself does not bring ultimate fulfillment.
• E PH E S I A NS 2 :9 | Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done.
All our work and good deeds, no matter how impressive, will never save us.
PROMISES FROM GOD
• PSA L M 1 4 5 :1 4 | The Lord helps the fallen and lifts those bent beneath their loads.
