You can’t sit around waiting for God to reveal his will for you; you must proactively
look for it. Actively seek God’s will through prayer, reading the Bible, conversation
with mature believers and reliable advisors, and by discerning the circumstances
around you.
• H O SE A 6 :3 | “Oh, that we might know the Lord! Let us press on to know him. He will
respond to us.” (See note on page 791.)
Seek God’s will passionately, not casually.
• J A ME S 1 :5 | If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will
not rebuke you for asking.
• PR O VE R B S 2 :6 | For the Lord grants wisdom!
• 1 J O H N 5 :1 4 | And we are confident that he hears us whenever we ask for anything that
pleases him.
Pray, asking God to reveal his will to you.
• A C T S 2 1 :1 4 | When it was clear that we couldn’t persuade him, we gave up and said, “The
Lord’s will be done.” (See note on page 1003.)
Sometimes God’s will for you becomes evident through circumstances beyond your control. Even though you do the seeking, allow God to work out his will in the way he deems
best. You will discover that you like where he takes you.
The natural abilities you have are gifts from God, and they are often a clue to what God
wants you to do. Why would God give you certain talents and spiritual gifts and not ask
you to use them? You may have natural gifts in the areas of cooking, entertaining, managing a business, teaching, handling money, playing an instrument, or many other things.
Use whatever gifts you have been given to bring honor and glory to God, and you will be
right where you need to be to discover God’s will for you.
What are some of the things I can know are God’s will for me?
• R E VE L AT I O N 1 0 :4 | But I heard a voice from heaven saying, “Keep secret what the seven
thunders said, and do not write it down.” (See note on page 1159.)
God has not revealed everything to us, but he has revealed all we need to know to live for
him now.
• A MO S 5 :2 4 | I want to see a mighty flood of justice, an endless river of righteous living.
God’s will is that you seek justice at all times and do what is right.
• 1 C O R I NT H I A NS 1 4 :1 | Let love be your highest goal!
God’s will is that you always love others.
• MA R K 1 0 :4 5 | “For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others.”
God’s will is that you serve others, putting them above yourself.
• E X O DU S 2 0 :1 | Then God gave the people all these instructions . . .
God’s will is that you obey his laws for living.
• G A L AT I A NS 5 :2 2 | But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy,
peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness . . .
God’s will is that you live under the power and guidance of the Holy Spirit.
• PR O VE R B S 1 6 :3 | Commit your actions to the Lord, and your plans will succeed.
God’s will is that you do everything as if you were doing it for him.
• J A ME S 4 :1 7 | Remember, it is sin to know what you ought to do and then not do it.
When you are faced with the unknown, keep doing what you know to do: loving others,
worshiping God, and cultivating the fruit of the Spirit in your life. Trust God to show you
the next step when you need it.
