• 2 T I MOT H Y 3 :2 -5 | For people will love only themselves and their money. They will be
boastful and proud, scoffing at God, disobedient to their parents, and ungrateful. They will
consider nothing sacred. They will be unloving and unforgiving; they will slander others
and have no self-control. They will be cruel and hate what is good. They will betray their
friends, be reckless, be puffed up with pride, and love pleasure rather than God. They will
act religious, but they will reject the power that could make them godly.
A consistently ungrateful attitude will eventually turn you into a bitter and mean-spirited
person.

believe what I want and everyone will be happy. But if everyone did what they wanted, it
wouldn’t take long for chaos and anarchy to reign. Human beings have always wanted
to reserve the right to determine spiritual truth. While we readily accept truth in other
arenas—the effects of gravity, the rules of mathematics—we’d like to pick and choose
when it comes to spiritual truth. There must be some rules, some laws that all people
must follow all the time if this world is to make sense. When people follow these rules,
societies function well. Thus, there must be some absolute truths, set into place from
the beginning of time, that apply to all people in all times and places. When people live
by these truths, the world functions well. Ironically, tolerance—which embraces any kind
of religion, idea, or belief—denies the existence of absolutes. The only absolute is that
there are no absolutes!
The Bible makes it very clear that we do not determine truth; rather, we discover
truth. We are free to ignore truth if we so choose, but we do so at our own risk. The
Bible reveals the truths that make the world work, that make relationships work, and
