Stress continued
Take care of your body. Adequate rest, regular exercise, and proper nutrition are essential
to dealing with stress effectively.
• MAT T H E W 1 1 :2 8 | “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I
will give you rest.” (See note on page 871.)
When you allow Jesus to carry your burdens and teach you from his humble and gentle
spirit, you will find your stress melt away and experience peacefulness in your soul instead.
Jesus’ humility and gentleness counteract the pride and irritability that fuel so much of the
conflict and stress in life.
• G A L AT I A NS 6 :9 | So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will
reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up.
Don’t let stress defeat you. When you are tired of doing good, it might be because you are
just too tired.
Our true character is exposed when we are under stress. How can I respond
so something good can come from it?
• R O MA NS 5 :3 | We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that
they help us develop endurance.
S
• J A ME S 1 :2 -4 | Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way,
consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your
endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed,
you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.

Character is built from the positive building blocks of life. But it is also built from conquering the stresses and problems of life. What you do with stress not only reveals your
character but also helps develop your character.
PROMISE FROM GOD
• J O H N 1 6 :3 3 | “I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you
will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.”

Success See also Failure; Planning; Purpose; Will of God
In most cultures, success is defined by how much we own and how much we achieve.
But by God’s standards, success is measured not by material assets but by spiritual
assets, not by what you have but by who you are, not by what you know but by knowing
God and serving him. Some are successful both by the world’s standards and by God’s
standards, but this is rare. We get into trouble when we gain material or worldly success
at the expense of true success as God defines it. On the day of our death, when we lay
aside all material assets, what we own will have absolutely no eternal value. But how we
have succeeded in what God considers important will count in every way. It is interesting
and frustrating to realize just how much the world has succeeded in flip-flopping what
we actually value with what we should value. Partnering with God in this life is the best
way to ensure success in the next.
What is true success in God’s eyes?
• A C T S 1 6 :3 1 | “Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved.”
Faith in Jesus.
• MAT T H E W 2 2 :3 7 | Jesus replied, “ ‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart,
all your soul, and all your mind.’ ”
Love for God.
• PSA L M 1 1 9 :1 1 5 | For I intend to obey the commands of my God.
