Sin continued
• PSA L M 5 1 :2 -3 | Wash me clean from my guilt. Purify me from my sin. For I recognize my
rebellion; it haunts me day and night.
• PSA L M 1 3 9 :2 3 -2 4 | Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious
thoughts. Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of
everlasting life.
• G A L AT I A NS 3 :2 2 | But the Scriptures declare that we are all prisoners of sin, so we receive
God’s promise of freedom only by believing in Jesus Christ.
• 1 J O H N 1 :9 | But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins
and to cleanse us from all wickedness.
Ask God to cleanse your heart from sin. Confessing your sins to God and turning away
from them and turning toward God to obey him is the only way to be free from sin’s
power and your guilt. When you confess your sins to God, he forgives you and forgets
them.
• R O MA NS 6 :6 , 1 8 | Our old sinful selves were crucified with Christ so that sin might lose its
power in our lives. We are no longer slaves to sin. . . . Now you are free from your slavery to
sin, and you have become slaves to righteous living.
• G A L AT I A NS 5 :2 4 | Those who belong to Christ Jesus have nailed the passions and desires
of their sinful nature to his cross and crucified them there.
S
Because of Jesus’ death and resurrection, those who have faith in him are free from the
power of sin. This doesn’t mean you will no longer sin but that sin’s power to enslave you
has been defeated.

Why did God require sacrifices in the Old Testament—and why were they
so bloody?
• L E V I T I C U S 1 :4 | “Lay your hand on the animal’s head, and the Lord will accept its death
in your place to purify you, making you right with him.” (See note on page 93.)
• E X O DU S 2 4 :8 | Then Moses took the blood from the basins and splattered it over the
people.
The sacrificial system reminded Israel of the seriousness of sin before their holy God. The
sacrifice symbolized the person’s desire to be forgiven for sin and thus be restored to God
and receive new life. A life had to be given up (the animal’s) so that a life could be spared
(the person’s). The blood of the sacrifice represented one life being poured out in substitution for another.
PROMISES FROM GOD
• I SA I A H 1 :1 8 | “Though your sins are like scarlet, I will make them as white as snow.”
• R O MA NS 6 :2 3 | For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through
Christ Jesus our Lord.
Singleness See also Loneliness; Marriage; Purpose; Will of God
People who are single include those who have never married, those who are divorced,
and those who are widowed. The Bible does not set forth either singleness or marriage
as the absolute standard for everyone. Rather, Scripture teaches that each individual
must seek the will of God for his or her life. For some, this will lead to marriage. For
others, it will lead to singleness. Single or married, our purpose is the same: to honor
and serve God and to help others.
Is God’s plan for everyone to marry? If I’m single, am I missing out on God’s
plan for me?
• MAT T H E W 1 9 :1 2 | “Some choose not to marry for the sake of the Kingdom of Heaven.”
