How do I know what is a sin and what isn’t?
• E X O DU S 2 0 :1 -1 7 | Then God gave the people all these instructions.
The Ten Commandments are God’s absolute moral and ethical standard.
• E PH E SI A NS 5 :8 | For once you were full of darkness, but now you have light from the Lord.
So live as people of light!
Our behavior is to model that of Jesus and to exemplify the light of Christ that fills our
hearts.
• C O L O SS I A NS 3 :5 | So put to death the sinful, earthly things lurking within you.
God calls us to rid our lives of anything that we know is wrong or hurtful to other people.
How do I deceive myself?
• 1 C O R I NT H I A NS 3 :1 8 | Stop deceiving yourselves. If you think you are wise by this world’s
standards, you need to become a fool to be truly wise.
You deceive yourself when you live as though this world is all there is.
• J E R E MI A H 1 7 :9 | “The human heart is the most deceitful of all things.”
• G A L AT I A NS 6 :7 | Don’t be misled—you cannot mock the justice of God.
• 2 SA MU E L 1 5 :4 | “I wish I were the judge. Then everyone could bring their cases to me for
judgment, and I would give them justice!”
• R O MA NS 7 :1 4 -2 5 | But if I do what I don’t want to do, I am not really the one doing
wrong; it is sin living in me that does it.
You will always struggle with sin in this life, but in Christ you are guaranteed complete
victory over sin for all eternity.
• 1 J O H N 3 :9 | Those who have been born into God’s family do not make a practice of
sinning.
Although believers may sin, by God’s grace they are not dominated by the practice of sin.
• R O MA NS 8 :5 | But those who are controlled by the Holy Spirit think about things that
please the Spirit.
Sin loses its influence over you as you increasingly yield your life to the control of the
Holy Spirit.
• PSA L M 1 1 9 :1 1 | I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.
God’s Word leads you away from sin.
How can I be free from sin’s guilt and power?
• I SA I A H 1 :1 8 | “Come now, let’s settle this,” says the Lord. “Though your sins are like
scarlet, I will make them as white as snow. Though they are red like crimson, I will make
them as white as wool.”
• MAT T H E W 2 6 :2 8 | “This is my blood, which confirms the covenant between God and his
people. It is poured out as a sacrifice to forgive the sins of many.”
• 2 C O R I NT H I A NS 5 :2 1 | For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our
sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ.
• R O MA NS 6 :7 | For when we died with Christ we were set free from the power of sin.
• H E B R E W S 9 :1 4 | Just think how much more the blood of Christ will purify our consciences
from sinful deeds so that we can worship the living God. For by the power of the eternal
Spirit, Christ offered himself to God as a perfect sacrifice for our sins.
God has made it possible for the stain of your sin to be removed through the death and
resurrection of Jesus Christ.
• PSA L M 1 9 :1 2 | How can I know all the sins lurking in my heart? Cleanse me from these
hidden faults.
