Sin continued
• L E V I T I C U S 5 :1 7 | “Suppose you sin by violating one of the Lord’s commands. Even
if you are unaware of what you have done, you are guilty and will be punished for
your sin.”
• L E V I T I C U S 2 0 :2 6 | “You must be holy because I, the Lord, am holy.” (See note on page 110.)
• R O MA NS 2 :5 | But because you are stubborn and refuse to turn from your sin, you are
storing up terrible punishment for yourself. For a day of anger is coming, when God’s
righteous judgment will be revealed.
Sin brings God’s punishment because it is a violation of his laws and holiness. Death is the
penalty for your sins—physical death and eternal judgment by God.
• G E NE S I S 3 :6 | So she took some of the fruit and ate it. Then she gave some to her husband,
who was with her, and he ate it, too.
Even a seemingly small sin must be looked at for what it is: disobedience to God. One of
the realities of sin is that its effects spread, and soon the cycle of consequences is spinning far beyond our control.
• PR O V E R B S 1 6 :1 6 | How much better to get wisdom than gold, and good judgment than
silver! (See note on page 572.)
Are you willing to pay the price for a certain action? God does not prevent us from acting
foolishly, but he does remind us of the consequences of foolishness.

• G A L AT I A NS 6 :7 | You will always harvest what you plant.
• 2 C H R O NI C L E S 2 6 :1 8 -1 9 | They confronted King Uzziah and said, “. . . Get out of the
sanctuary, for you have sinned.” . . . Leprosy suddenly broke out on his forehead.

Sin is wrong, so it always produces consequences—some very obvious and some not so
obvious, but both can be equally harmful to us.
• G A L AT I A NS 5 :1 9 -2 1 | When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, the results are very
clear: sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures, idolatry, sorcery, hostility, quarreling,
jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissension, division, envy, drunkenness, wild
parties, and other sins like these. Let me tell you again, as I have before, that anyone living
that sort of life will not inherit the Kingdom of God.
Sin is toxic and unhealthy on so many levels.
Is it sin if it doesn’t hurt anybody?
• J O S H U A 7 :1 -2 5 | But Israel violated the instructions about the things set apart for the
Lord. A man named Achan had stolen some of these dedicated things. . . . Then Joshua
said to Achan, “Why have you brought trouble on us?” (See note on page 198.)
There is no such thing as a private sin. Our sinful actions always affect more people than
just ourselves. Beware of the temptation to rationalize your sins by saying they are too
small or too personal to hurt anyone but you.
• E Z E K I E L 3 :2 0 | “If righteous people turn away from their righteous behavior . . . they
will die. And if you do not warn them, they will die in their sins. . . . And I will hold you
responsible.” (See note on page 731.)
A watchman is guilty if he knows the enemy is coming and remains silent. We are guilty if
we remain silent when we should warn another person of the consequences of his or her
actions.
• 2 C H R O NI C L E S 7 :1 9 -2 0 | “But if you or your descendants abandon me and disobey the
decrees and commands I have given you, and if you serve and worship other gods, then I
will uproot the people from this land.”
The sins of a nation’s leaders affect all of its citizens.
• NU MB E R S 5 :5 -6 | Then the Lord said . . . “If any of the people—men or women—betray
the Lord by doing wrong to another person, they are guilty.” (See note on page 125.)
Sin always hurts God.
