• R O MA NS 6 :1 2 -1 3 | Do not let sin control the way you live; do not give in to sinful desires. Do
not let any part of your body become an instrument of evil to serve sin. (See note on page 1016.)
Sin is a power that seeks to influence, enslave, and destroy.
• E PH E SI A NS 2 :2 | You used to live in sin, just like the rest of the world, obeying the devil.
Sin, in its most basic element, is obedience to Satan.
• R O MA NS 6 :1 9 -2 0 | Previously, you let yourselves be slaves to impurity and lawlessness,
which led ever deeper into sin. . . . When you were slaves to sin, you were free from the
obligation to do right.
Sin is the most deeply ingrained addiction of every human being.
• R O MA NS 7 :2 1 -2 3 | I have discovered this principle of life—that when I want to do what is
right, I inevitably do what is wrong. I love God’s law with all my heart. But there is another
power within me that is at war with my mind. This power makes me a slave to the sin that
is still within me.
Sin is warfare of the soul, a constant battle inside you.
• J A ME S 4 :1 7 | Remember, it is sin to know what you ought to do and then not do it.
• J E R E MI A H 9 :3 | “They refuse to stand up for the truth.” (See note on page 674.)
Sin is not only doing wrong things but also failing to do the right things.
Sin is selfishness.

• MA R K 8 :3 4 | Then, calling the crowd to join his disciples, he said, “If any of you wants
to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross, and follow me.”
• PSA L M 1 4 :3 | But no, all have turned away; all have become corrupt. No one does good,
not a single one!
• PSA L M 5 1 :5 | For I was born a sinner—yes, from the moment my mother conceived me.
• E C C L E S I A S T E S 7 :2 0 | Not a single person on earth is always good and never sins.
• I SA I A H 5 3 :6 | All of us, like sheep, have strayed away. We have left God’s paths to follow
our own.
• R O MA NS 5 :1 2 | When Adam sinned, sin entered the world. Adam’s sin brought death, so
death spread to everyone, for everyone sinned.
• R O MA NS 3 :2 3 | For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.
Everyone is born with a sinful nature. Therefore, all people have sinned against God. It is
a condition at birth—not something that can be avoided with the right training.
• G E NE SI S 6 :5 | The Lord observed the extent of human wickedness on the earth, and he
saw that everything they thought or imagined was consistently and totally evil.
• J E R E MI A H 1 7 :9 | “The human heart is the most deceitful of all things, and desperately
wicked. Who really knows how bad it is?”
The human heart is far more sinful than you want to believe.
God gives us the freedom to choose what we want to do, but are there always
consequences when we choose to sin?
• I SA I A H 5 9 :2 | It’s your sins that have cut you off from God. Because of your sins, he has
turned away and will not listen anymore.
• R O MA NS 6 :2 3 | The wages of sin is death.
Sin alienates and separates you from God so that you are not able to enjoy a relationship
with him, either now or forever, unless you deal with it.
• MAT T H E W 1 5 :1 8 -1 9 | “But the words you speak come from the heart—that’s what defiles
you. For from the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, all sexual immorality, theft,
lying, and slander.”
Your sins make you impure and makes your heart bent on doing wrong.
