Self-Esteem continued
Where do I get my confidence?
• PSA L M 2 7 :1 | The Lord is my light and my salvation—so why should I be afraid? The
Lord is my fortress . . . so why should I tremble?
• PSA L M 1 2 1 :8 | The Lord keeps watch over you as you come and go, both now and forever.
Many great athletes say their real contest is a mental one, not a physical one. It’s the
same way in your spiritual life. Your confidence comes not from your physical circumstances (how you look or what you achieve) but from that inner assurance that God is by
your side, making his wisdom and power available to you daily and working out his best
plan for your life.
• PH I L I P P I A NS 4 :1 3 | For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.
Confidence is not pride but complete security in knowing that God has called you for a
specific purpose and that he has given you spiritual gifts to carry out that purpose.
• J E R E MI A H 1 7 :7 | “But blessed are those who trust in the Lord and have made the Lord
their hope and confidence.”
Confidence comes from obedience to God. The more you obey the more you see God’s
blessings from living his way.
• PSA L M 1 1 8 :8 | It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in people.
S
How much you trust someone depends on how confident you are that they can be trusted.
That is why you can be completely confident in what God’s Word says, because God has
never broken a single promise. He will always do what he says.
• J O H N 1 6 :3 3 | “I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you
will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.”

• J O H N 1 4 :1 -3 | “Don’t let your hearts be troubled. . . . I am going to prepare a place for
you. . . . When everything is ready, I will come and get you.”
Confidence comes from knowing with certainty that your eternal future is secured. When you
know that this life isn’t all there is, you don’t need to fear what happens to you here on earth.
• R O MA NS 8 :3 8 | And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love.
Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our
worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love.
Confidence comes from knowing that God loves you unconditionally. Any sin you have
committed cannot cause God to love you any less.
• 1 C O R I NT H I A NS 1 2 :7 , 1 1 , 18, 22, 27 | A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help
each other. . . . It is the one and only Spirit who distributes all these gifts. He alone decides
which gift each person should have. . . . Our bodies have many parts, and God has put
each part just where he wants it. . . . In fact, some parts of the body that seem weakest and
least important are actually the most necessary. . . . All of you together are Christ’s body,
and each of you is a part of it.
Confidence comes from recognizing and exercising the gifts and abilities God has given
you. To totally lack confidence in yourself is to fail to recognize that God has given you
these special abilities and the opportunity to use them.
• PR O V E R B S 3 :5 -6 | Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own
understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.
When you persevere in asking God to show his will for you, he will reveal it to you and
direct you. And when he directs you, you can be confident you are going in the right
direction!
Do I have to be important for God to use me?
• 1 C O R I NT H I A NS 1 :2 6 | Remember, dear brothers and sisters, that few of you were wise in
the world’s eyes or powerful or wealthy when God called you. Instead, God chose things
the world considers foolish in order to shame those who think they are wise. And he chose
things that are powerless to shame those who are powerful.
Significance in the world’s eyes may be insignificance in God’s eyes. Insignificance in the
