• 2 C H R O NI C L E S 3 0 :9 | “For the Lord your God is gracious and merciful. If you return to
him, he will not continue to turn his face from you.”
Repentance is necessary for an ongoing relationship with God. Turn away from anything
that is preventing you from worshiping and obeying God wholeheartedly.
• 1 T I MOT H Y 1 :1 6 | But God had mercy on me so that Christ Jesus could use me as a prime
example of his great patience with even the worst sinners. Then others will realize that
they, too, can believe in him and receive eternal life.
• I SA I A H 5 5 :7 | Let the wicked change their ways and banish the very thought of doing
wrong. Let them turn to the Lord that he may have mercy on them. Yes, turn to our God,
for he will forgive generously.
Repentance is your only hope of receiving God’s mercy. Those who refuse to see and
admit their own sins can’t be forgiven for them; they have placed themselves outside of
God’s mercy and blessing.
• 2 C H R O NI C L E S 7 :1 4 | “If my people . . . will humble themselves and pray . . . I will hear
from heaven and will forgive their sins.”
• E Z E K I E L 3 3 :1 2 | “The righteous behavior of righteous people will not save them if they
turn to sin, nor will the wicked behavior of wicked people destroy them if they repent and
turn from their sins.” (See note on page 756.)
Repentance leads to forgiveness of sin.
The unrepentant heart rejects God and remains in sin’s grasp.
R
• J E R E MI A H 5 :3 | They are determined, with faces set like stone; they have refused to repent.
Jesus taught that without repentance we face judgment.
• L U K E 1 5 :1 0 | “There is joy in the presence of God’s angels when even one sinner repents.”
All heaven rejoices when one sinner repents.
Is repentance a one-time event, or do I need to repent each time I sin?
• PSA L M 5 1 :1 7 | The sacrifice you desire is a broken spirit. You will not reject a broken and
repentant heart, O God.
While salvation is a one-time event, God is pleased by broken and contrite hearts willing to
confess and repent of sin.
• 1 J O H N 1 :8 -9 | If we claim we have no sin, we are . . . not living in the truth. But if we
confess our sins to him . . .
Constant confession and repentance of sin is a mark of the person walking in the light of
fellowship with God.
PROMISES FROM GOD
• J E R E MI A H 3 :2 2 | “My wayward children,” says the Lord, “come back to me, and I will
heal your wayward hearts.”
• A C T S 2 :3 8 | “Each of you must repent of your sins and turn to God, and be baptized. . . .
Then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”
Reputation See also Character
We all have a reputation, whether we like it or not. Whether we intentionally try to
project a certain image or couldn’t care less what others think, people do form an
opinion of us through our behavior, personality, or abilities. A good reputation can help
us make friends and get jobs. A bad reputation can help us make friends (with others
who don’t have good reputations) and leave us isolated, shunned, or disrespected.
The Bible encourages us to build our reputation on solid character rather than on
external image. A reputation built on image without substance eventually becomes
a crumbling facade.
