When you immerse yourself in Scripture and surround yourself with positive influences
who will give you good advice.
• PR O VE R B S 1 4 :2 9 | People with understanding control their anger; a hot temper shows
great foolishness.
• 1 SA MU E L 1 9 :9 -1 0 | As David played his harp, Saul hurled his spear at David. But David
dodged out of the way, and leaving the spear stuck in the wall, he fled and escaped into
the night.
When you avoid acting on impulse in the heat of anger. A hasty mistake can have longlasting effects.
• E X O DU S 2 3 :2 | You must not follow the crowd in doing wrong. When you are called to
testify in a dispute, do not be swayed by the crowd to twist justice.
When you don’t let your peers pressure you into doing something you know is foolish
or sinful.
When you think before speaking. The greatest regrets are often caused by words; once
spoken they cannot be taken back. If you have any thought that you might regret what you
are about to say, don’t speak.
R
• PR O VE R B S 2 9 :1 1 | Fools vent their anger, but the wise quietly hold it back.
• J A ME S 3 :2 , 5 | Indeed, we all make many mistakes. For if we could control our tongues,
we would be perfect and could also control ourselves in every other way. . . . In the same
way, the tongue is a small thing that makes grand speeches. But a tiny spark can set a
great forest on fire.
• 2 C O R I NT H I A NS 7 :1 0 | For the kind of sorrow God wants us to experience leads us away
from sin and results in salvation. There’s no regret for that kind of sorrow.
• R O MA NS 4 :7 -8 | “Oh, what joy for those whose disobedience is forgiven, whose sins are
put out of sight. Yes, what joy for those whose record the Lord has cleared of sin.”
Rejection
To reject is to discard something or someone as unwanted or defective. When a person
is rejected, great pain is often the result. Someone who is engaged is rejected when the
engagement is broken; a student is rejected by his or her peer group; a child is rejected
by a parent—in each case the consequences are devastating.
How can I recover from rejection in my life?
• I SA I A H 5 3 :3 | He was despised and rejected. . . . We turned our backs on him. (See note on
page 650.)
As the prophet looks forward to the Messiah, who would be despised and rejected by
others, we know we have a Savior who understands.
• 1 PE T E R 5 :7 | Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you.
Don’t try to deal with rejection by yourself. Bring your concerns to God.
• J O H N 1 4 :2 6 | “When the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy
Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you.”
Invite the Holy Spirit into your life. Jesus promised the Holy Spirit would stay with us
forever.
• R O MA NS 8 :3 8 | I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love.
Remember that, though others may reject us, nothing can separate us from God’s love!
Will God ever reject me?
• J O H N 4 :1 0 | Jesus replied, “If you only knew the gift God has for you and who you are
speaking to, you would ask me, and I would give you living water.”
