When you let God transform you by the power of his Holy Spirit, he will literally begin to
change the way you think so that your mind will know what he wants you to do.
Has God called me to do specific things?
• J E R E MI A H 1 :4 -5 | The Lord gave me this message: “I knew you before I formed you in
your mother’s womb. Before you were born I set you apart and appointed you.”
God may call you to do a certain job or to accomplish a very specific task or ministry.
When that happens, he will make sure you know what it is. You will feel a very strong sense of
leading from him. It’s up to you to respond and walk through the door of opportunity he opens.
• 1 C O R I NT H I A NS 1 2 :4 -7 | There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but the same Spirit is
the source of them all. . . . A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other.
• 2 T I MOT H Y 4 :5 | Fully carry out the ministry God has given you.
God gives each individual a spiritual gift (sometimes more than one!) and a special ministry
in the church where you can use those gifts to help and encourage others and to bring
glory to his name. These specific spiritual gifts, when used by you, help you fulfill the
purpose for which God made you.
• C O L O SS I A NS 3 :2 3 | Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the
Lord rather than for people.
The call to follow Jesus does not necessarily mean a call to a specific job or Christian
ministry. Sometimes your call may simply be to obey God wherever you are right now.
• E C C L E S I A S T E S 1 1 :9 | Do everything you want to do; take it all in. But remember that you
must give an account to God for everything you do.
God gives you the freedom to follow many different roads over the course of life and to pursue
many different activities, but remember that you will have to answer to him for everything you
do. Not everything you do is a call from God, but everything you do is accountable to God.
How can I experience God’s guidance?
• NU MB E R S 9 :1 7 | Whenever the cloud lifted from over the sacred tent, the people of Israel
would break camp and follow it.
If we want God’s guidance, we must first invite him to be with us.
• PR O VE R B S 3 :5 -6 | Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own
understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.
The key to seeking God’s guidance is knowing where to put your trust. Travelers rely on an
accurate map when they don’t know where they are going. A critically ill person relies on
the medical expert who knows the proper treatment. In the same way, the believer realizes
his own spiritual limitations and relies on God’s Word—life’s instruction manual—in matters
of faith. You do not understand all the complexities of life, but God does. You must trust
him to guide you to find and recognize what is true.
• MAT T H E W 7 :7 -1 1 | “Keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on
seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you. . . . You
parents—if your children ask for a loaf of bread, do you give them a stone instead? . . . So
if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your
heavenly Father give good gifts to those who ask him.”
God invites you to pray—to go directly to him—so that you will know him more fully as
your loving Father and understand yourself more clearly too. Even as a parent gives more
and more responsibility to a child as he or she grows, so the Lord expects you to take
responsibility for seeking and following his direction.
