Purpose continued
• A C T S 1 3 :2 | One day as these men were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy
Spirit said, “Appoint Barnabas and Saul for the special work to which I have called them.”
Worship, prayer, fasting, and relationships with other believers will help you discern God’s
purpose for your life.
Does God have a special purpose for me?
• 1 C H R O NI C L E S 1 4 :2 | And David realized that the Lord had confirmed him as king over
Israel.
You don’t have to be an important leader to be given a specific purpose by God.
• PSA L M 5 7 :2 | I cry out to God Most High, to God who will fulfill his purpose for me.
God has a general purpose and a specific purpose for you. If nothing else, you have been
chosen by God to let the love of Jesus shine through you to make an impact on others.
More specifically, God has given you spiritual gifts and wants you to use them to make a
unique contribution in your sphere of influence. The more you fulfill your general purpose,
the more clear your specific purpose will become.
• A C T S 2 0 :2 4 | “My life is worth nothing to me unless I use it for finishing the work assigned
me by the Lord Jesus—the work of telling others the Good News about the wonderful grace
of God.”
P
God has given you work to do, a unique role he created just for you. Part of his purpose
for you is to bring his Good News of salvation to all people.

• 2 T I MOT H Y 1 :9 | God saved us and called us to live a holy life. He did this, not because we
deserved it, but because that was his plan from before the beginning of time—to show us
his grace through Christ Jesus.
You are called by God to live a holy life and to show the love of Jesus to others by the way
you live.
• J O H N 1 5 :1 6 | “You didn’t choose me. I chose you. I appointed you to go and produce lasting fruit, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask for, using my name.”
As you pursue your purpose as assigned by God, he promises that your life will have lasting significance and eternal results.
• 1 C O R I NT H I A NS 1 5 :5 8 | So, my dear brothers and sisters, be strong and immovable. Always
work enthusiastically for the Lord, for you know that nothing you do for the Lord is ever useless.
As you pursue your God-given purpose, you should not get discouraged even when it
seems that nothing is happening. God wastes nothing.
How do I know what my calling is?
• PSA L M 1 1 9 :1 0 5 | Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path.
The first step to knowing your calling is to get to know God more intimately by reading his
Word. As God communicates to you through the Bible, he will show you what to do and
where he wants you to go.
• DA NI E L 1 :1 7 | God gave these four young men an unusual aptitude for understanding
every aspect of literature and wisdom.
God has given every individual special aptitudes and abilities. These provide the biggest
clue to what God wants you to do. When he calls you to do something unique for him, he
will allow you to use your God-given gifts to get the job done. In the meantime, develop
those special abilities and begin to use them, and you will see what God wants you to do.
Always serve God and move through life in ways that use your primary gifts.
• A C T S 2 0 :2 4 | “But my life is worth nothing to me unless I use it for finishing the work
assigned me by the Lord Jesus.”
When God gives you a specific calling, it fills your thoughts and energies so that you have
a longing to pursue it.
• R O MA NS 1 2 :2 | Let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think.
Then you will learn to know God’s will for you.
