Pride continued
• PSA L M 1 0 :4 | The wicked are too proud to seek God. They seem to think that God is dead.
(See note on page 484.)
Pride leads to ignoring God (because you think your way is better) and setting a course for
a life of disobedience.
• 2 C H R O NI C L E S 1 0 :1 1 | “Yes, my father laid heavy burdens on you, but I’m going to make
them even heavier!” (See note on page 391.)
Motivated by pride, Rehoboam pressed too hard and his kingdom was divided. Those who
insist on having it all often wind up with little or nothing.
• 2 T I MOT H Y 3 :2 -4 | They will be boastful and proud. . . . They will be unloving and
unforgiving. . . . They will betray their friends.
Pride can destroy relationships faster than almost anything else because it is always
taking away from others. Pride strengthens your position at the expense of others. It
is selfish.
• 2 C H R O NI C L E S 2 6 :1 6 | But when he had become powerful, he also became proud, which
led to his downfall.
An inflated estimation of our past successes leads to prideful behavior and, ultimately,
judgment.

• L U K E 1 8 :1 1 | “The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed this prayer: ‘I thank you, God,
that I am not like other people—cheaters, sinners, adulterers. I’m certainly not like that
tax collector!’ ”
Pride blinds you to your own sin.

• O B A DI A H 1 :3 | “You have been deceived by your own pride because you live in a rock
fortress and make your home high in the mountains.” (See note on page 812.)
Pride finds comfort in false security.
• 1 C O R I NT H I A NS 4 :6 | If you pay attention to what I have quoted from the Scriptures, you
won’t be proud of one of your leaders at the expense of another.
Pride can infect your spiritual life and divide the church.
• A C T S 8 :3 0 -3 1 | “Do you understand what you are reading?” . . . And he urged Philip to
come up into the carriage and sit with him. (See note on page 989.)
Pride may keep you from asking others for help. In this case, the man in the carriage had
the humility to ask for help.
• A C T S 1 2 :2 3 | Instantly, an angel of the Lord struck Herod with a sickness, because he
accepted the people’s worship instead of giving the glory to God.
God hates pride and will judge it severely.
What are the effects of pride if left unchecked in my life?
• 1 K I NG S 1 :5 | About that time David’s son Adonijah . . . began boasting, “I will make
myself king.”
Pride will delude you into thinking you have almost God-like qualities that demand the
respect and reverence of others.
• 2 K I NG S 1 4 :1 0 | “Be content with your victory and stay at home! Why stir up trouble that
will only bring disaster on you and the people of Judah?” But Amaziah refused to listen.
• 2 C H R O NI C L E S 2 6 :1 6 | But when he had become powerful, he also became proud, which
led to his downfall.
An inflated estimation of your status and successes leads to the presumption that you can
do anything you want. And that will, eventually and ultimately, set you up for a downfall.
• 2 K I NG S 5 :1 1 | But Naaman became angry and stalked away.
Pride can keep you from accepting the very help that can save you.
• 1 C O R I NT H I A NS 1 0 :1 2-1 3 | If you think you are standing strong, be careful not to fall. The
temptations in your life are no different from what others experience.
