Prayer continued
• J A ME S 5 :1 6 | Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be
healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful
results.
• 1 J O H N 5 :1 4 | And we are confident that he hears us whenever we ask for anything that
pleases him. (See note on page 1142.)
As you maintain a close relationship with Jesus and consistently study his Word, your
prayers will be more aligned with his will. When that happens, God is delighted to grant
your requests.
• 2 C O R I NT H I A NS 1 2 :8 -9 | Three different times I begged the Lord to take it away. Each
time he said, “. . . My power works best in weakness.”
Sometimes, like Paul, we will find that God answers prayer by giving us not what we ask
for but what is better for us.
• E X O DU S 1 4 :1 5 | Then the Lord said to Moses, “Why are you crying out to me? Tell the
people to get moving!” (See note on page 65.)
Effective prayer is accompanied by a willingness to obey. When God opens a door, walk
through it!
• MA R K 1 1 :2 3 | “I tell you the truth, you can say to this mountain, ‘May you be lifted up
and thrown into the sea,’ and it will happen. But you must really believe it will happen and
have no doubt in your heart.” (See note on page 909.)
P
• J O H N 1 4 :1 4 | “Yes, ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it!”

Jesus’ name is not a magic wand. Praying in Jesus’ name means praying according to
Jesus’ character and purposes. When you pray like this, you are asking for what God
already wants to give you.
What can I ask God for?
• J O S H U A 2 1 :1 -2 | The leaders of the tribe of Levi . . . said, “The Lord commanded Moses
to give us towns to live in.”
God will grant your requests based on your motives and his will.
• 2 K I NG S 6 :1 7 | Then Elisha prayed, “O Lord, open his eyes and let him see!”
Ask God to open your eyes to the real battles going on around you.
PROMISES FROM GOD
• PSA L M 1 4 5 :1 8 | The Lord is close to all who call on him.
• PSA L M 5 7 :2 | I cry out to God Most High, to God who will fulfill his purpose for me.
• PSA L M 1 1 6 :1 -2 | I love the Lord because he hears my voice and my prayer for mercy.
Because he bends down to listen . . .
• PSA L M 1 1 8 :5 | In my distress I prayed to the Lord, and the Lord answered me and set
me free.

The key to living in this life—and the next—is to daily experience the power of the presence of the almighty God. When we enter God’s presence, we should recognize that we
are experiencing both the closeness and the majesty of God. Being with him includes
both the joy of intimate friendship and the awe of ultimate respect. Obedience to him is
then the result of understanding what an honor it is to live in and experience his presence. Through his Holy Spirit, God promises to be with us always if we just ask him.
When we accept him as Lord of our lives, he forgives us and purifies us on the inside
so that he can then reside in us.
