Mistakes continued
• 1 S A MU E L 1 3 :1 2 | “So I said, ‘The Philistines are ready to march against us . . . !’ So I felt
compelled to offer the burnt offering myself before you came.”
Sometimes our mistakes are created by the selfish pursuit of our own agendas.
• J A ME S 3 :2 | We all make many mistakes. For if we could control our tongues, we would
be perfect and could also control ourselves in every other way.
One of the most common mistakes is saying something we later regret.
• J O NA H 1 :3 | But Jonah got up and went in the opposite direction to get away from the Lord.
A terrible mistake we can make is running from God.
• E X O DU S 2 :1 2 | After looking in all directions to make sure no one was watching, Moses
killed the Egyptian and hid the body in the sand.
Even Moses’ life was marred by an immature and terrible mistake.
• MAT T H E W 2 6 :7 4 | Peter swore, “A curse on me if I’m lying—I don’t know the man!” (See
note on page 890.)
Christ restored Peter to fellowship even after his most painful mistake.
• PH I L I P P I A NS 3 :1 3 | No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it, but I focus on
this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead . . .
Following Christ means allowing him to forgive our mistakes and call us to a more glorious
future.

• G E NE S I S 2 0 :2 | Abraham introduced his wife, Sarah, by saying, “She is my sister.” So King
Abimelech of Gerar sent for Sarah and had her brought to him at his palace.
• G E NE S I S 1 5 :6 | And Abram believed the Lord, and the Lord counted him as righteous
because of his faith.
Abram made many mistakes. So how could God call him “righteous”? Despite his bad
choices, Abram believed and trusted in God. It was faith, not perfection, that made him
right in God’s eyes. This same principle is true for you, too. Rather than measuring your
goodness, God is looking for your faith and your willingness to follow him. When the Lord
finds faith, he declares you righteous.
What are some of the biggest mistakes I can make?
• A C T S 1 4 :1 1 -1 2 | When the crowd saw what Paul had done, they shouted in their local
dialect, “These men are gods in human form!” They decided that Barnabas was the Greek
god Zeus and that Paul was Hermes.
Worshiping anyone or anything other than God is a mistake.
• 2 C O R I NT H I A NS 5 :1 6 | So we have stopped evaluating others from a human point of view.
At one time we thought of Christ merely from a human point of view. How differently we
know him now!
• H E B R E W S 2 :3 | So what makes us think we can escape if we ignore this great salvation
that was first announced by the Lord Jesus himself and then delivered to us by those who
heard him speak?
Ignoring, neglecting, or refusing to acknowledge Jesus as God is a mistake with eternal
consequences.
• PSA L M 4 4 :2 1 | God would surely have known it, for he knows the secrets of every heart.
• J E R E MI A H 2 3 :2 4 | “Can anyone hide from me in a secret place? Am I not everywhere in all
the heavens and earth?” says the Lord.
• H E B R E W S 4 :1 3 | Nothing in all creation is hidden from God. Everything is naked and
exposed before his eyes, and he is the one to whom we are accountable.
To think God doesn’t see or overlooks sin is a mistake.
• G E NE S I S 3 :1 1 -1 3 | “Who told you that you were naked?” the Lord God asked. “Have you
eaten from the tree whose fruit I commanded you not to eat?” The man replied, “It was
the woman you gave me who gave me the fruit, and I ate it.” Then the Lord God asked the
woman, “What have you done?” “The serpent deceived me,” she replied. “That’s why I ate it.”
