• 1 PE T E R 4 :8 | Most important of all, continue to show deep love for each other, for love
covers a multitude of sins.
Love is an act of spiritual maturity, based on the eternal significance of each person and
on what God is doing in your life. When you learn to love the unlovable, you have developed the ability to see others as Jesus does.
• R O MA NS 1 2 :2 0 | “If your enemies are hungry, feed them. If they are thirsty, give them
something to drink.”
Even if you don’t like certain people, you can still choose to do tangible acts of love for
them.
• R O MA NS 1 2 :3 | I give each of you this warning: Don’t think you are better than you really
are. Be honest in your evaluation of yourselves.
Before you are too quick to dislike or dismiss someone, remember that you, too, have
qualities that others may find unattractive.
• MAT T H E W 5 :4 3 -4 4 | “You have heard the law that says, ‘Love your neighbor’ and hate
your enemy. But I say, love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you!”
Only in Christ’s love can we love our enemies.
Where can I get a true love for others? Where does that come from?
• 1 T H E S S A L O NI A NS 3 :1 2 | And may the Lord make your love for one another and for all
people grow and overflow, just as our love for you overflows.
L
• C O L O SS I A NS 1 :8 | He has told us about the love for others that the Holy Spirit has given
you.
God didn’t just create love, he is love. Trace love all the way back to its source, and there
is God. So when you invite God into your heart, you have the very love of God inside of
you to show toward others.
How do I learn to receive love?
• J O H N 1 3 :8 | “No,” Peter protested, “you will never ever wash my feet!” Jesus replied,
“Unless I wash you, you won’t belong to me.”
You cannot receive God’s love until you put aside pride and self-sufficiency.
• PH I L I PP I A NS 3 :9 | I no longer count on my own righteousness through obeying the law;
rather, I become righteous through faith in Christ.
When you stop trying to impress God with your good deeds, you are able to trust his
gracious gift of love.
• L U K E 1 8 :1 6 | “Let the children come to me. Don’t stop them! For the Kingdom of God
belongs to those who are like these children.”
Jesus encourages us to learn to receive his love with the trust of little children.
• H O SE A 2 :2 0 | “I will be faithful to you and make you mine, and you will finally know me
as the Lord.”
God’s love is absolutely faithful. You will know the benefits and security of that love when
you commit yourself to faithfulness as well.
Why should I love God?
• DE U T E R O NO MY 6 :5 | “And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your
soul, and all your strength.”
• J O SH U A 2 2 :5 | “Love the Lord your God, walk in all his ways, obey his commands, hold
firmly to him.”
• MA R K 1 2 :2 9 -3 0 | Jesus replied, “The most important commandment is this: ‘. . . You
must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your
strength.’ ”
God wants you to love him, not for his benefit but for yours. When you love him he makes
you holy in his eyes, you experience his very presence and power, his Spirit lives in you,
