• PR O VE R B S 1 6 :2 8 | A troublemaker plants seeds of strife; gossip separates the best of friends.

You live in a sinful, fallen world. Therefore, you will often be separated from friends and
family for various reasons. Sometimes you are lonely because you have hurt those you
care about and they have left you. Sometimes your friends stop being your friends for
reasons you don’t understand. And sometimes you have to say goodbye when a friend
moves away. God doesn’t want you to be lonely, but he allows people’s actions in this
life to take their natural course. In each of these circumstances, he promises to help you
learn from it and he promises to never leave you, always supplying you with comfort and
strength when you ask.
God has promised he will always be there for you. Nothing can separate you from him.
When your human relationships fail, take comfort from your friendship with God.

• R O MA NS 8 :3 8 -3 9 | And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s
love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor
our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s
love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation
will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus
our Lord.
• E X O DU S 6 :1 2 | “But Lord!” Moses objected. “My own people won’t listen to me anymore.”
(See note on page 57.)

• PR O VE R B S 1 8 :2 4 | There are “friends” who destroy each other, but a real friend sticks
closer than a brother.
• DE U T E R O NO MY 3 1 :6 | “Be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid and do not panic
before them. For the Lord your God will personally go ahead of you. He will neither fail
you nor abandon you.” (See note on page 187.)
• DE U T E R O NO MY 3 3 :2 7 | “The eternal God is your refuge, and his everlasting arms are

People we depend on sometimes desert us, abandon us, or turn away from us. There may
be only a few people we can truly count on—at times there may not be any. But one we
can always count on is God; he will never abandon us.
How can I help those who are lonely?

distress.
Invite them into your home and befriend them.
