know where they are going and why. Whenever others will follow your direction or your
thinking, you are in a leadership role. Therefore, leaders need to know what they believe
and why. As a Christian witness, you are a leader, one who shows others how to follow
Christ. God is our leader in all that relates to spiritual life—providing his Word for direction, his Son to show us the way, and his wisdom and help through the Holy Spirit.
What are some qualities of a good leader?
• 1 T I MOT H Y 3 :2 | A church leader must be a man whose life is above reproach.
• T I T U S 1 :6 | An elder must live a blameless life.
In these verses, Paul lists numerous characteristics for anyone in church leadership.
• NE H E MI A H 7 :2 | I gave the responsibility of governing Jerusalem to . . . Hananiah . . . for he
was a faithful man who feared God more than most.
A good leader shows faithfulness and reverence.
• MAT T H E W 2 0 :2 6 | “Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant.”
A good leader has a servant’s heart.
• 2 C H R O NI C L E S 3 2 :2 0 | Then King Hezekiah and the prophet Isaiah . . . cried out in prayer
to God in heaven. (See note on page 410.)
A good leader has a heart for prayer.
• 1 C H R O NI C L E S 2 1 :8 | Then David said to God, “I have sinned greatly by taking this census.”
Good leaders keep their eyes on Jesus.
• DA NI E L 6 :1 0 | He prayed three times a day, just as he had always done.
The words and actions of a good leader are consistent. Daniel was vocal about his faith in
God, even in a pagan land, and his actions backed that up.
• J O SH U A 1 :9 | “Be strong and courageous! . . . For the Lord your God is with you wherever
you go.”
A good leader shows courage based on the assurance of God’s presence.
• J O H N 3 :3 0 | “He must become greater and greater, and I must become less and less.”
Good leaders do not emphasize themselves.
• 1 J O H N 4 :1 | Dear friends, do not believe everyone who claims to speak by the Spirit.
• 2 J O H N 1 :1 0 | If anyone comes to your meeting and does not teach the truth about Christ,
don’t . . . give any kind of encouragement.
A good leader recognizes false teaching and boldly combats it.
• MI CA H 3 :1 | “Listen, you leaders of Israel! You are supposed to know right from wrong.”
• 2 K I NG S 1 2 :7 | So King Joash called for Jehoiada and the other priests and asked them,
“Why haven’t you repaired the Temple? Don’t use any more money for your own needs.
From now on, it must all be spent on Temple repairs.”
A good leader is consumed with doing what is right.
• MI CA H 2 :1 1 | That’s just the kind of prophet you would like! (See note on page 821.)
A good leader tells the truth, even if it makes others uncomfortable.
• H E B R E W S 6 :1 | Let us go on instead and become mature in our understanding.
A good leader demonstrates maturity, both in action and in knowledge of God’s Word.

who fought beside David in battle. All of them were expert archers.
Good leaders are not threatened by skilled subordinates. They gather skillful people
around them.

wear yourself out—and the people, too. This job is too heavy a burden for you to handle
