offering his spotless blood for the sins of the world. The high priests served the Jewish
people. Christ is High Priest for any who come to him.
Christ offers hope for today and hope for forever. We can face our problems today
because we face them with Jesus, our eternal hope. We have hope for tomorrow because
through his blood he bought our redemption and brings us the promise of life forever
with him in heaven.
This hope enables us to hold fast, come to God’s throne boldly in prayer, and find help
in Christ in time of need.
The next time a spirit of hopelessness sweeps over you, robbing you of the joy of living,
study Hebrews, and there discover the better way in Jesus Christ, our great High Priest.
Key verses in Hebrews
1:3 The Son radiates God’s own
glory and expresses the very
character of God, and he sustains
everything by the mighty power of
his command.
2:17-18 Therefore, it was
necessary for him to be made in
every respect like us, his brothers
and sisters, so that he could be our
merciful and faithful High Priest
before God. . . . Since he himself
has gone through suffering and
testing, he is able to help us when
we are being tested.
4:12 For the word of God is alive
and powerful. It is sharper than the
sharpest two-edged sword, cutting
between soul and spirit, between
joint and marrow. It exposes our
innermost thoughts and desires.
4:16 So let us come boldly to the
throne of our gracious God. There
we will receive his mercy, and we
will find grace to help us when we
need it most.
10:12, 14 But our High Priest
offered himself to God as a single
Jesus Christ Is God’s Son
Long ago God spoke many times and in
many ways to our ancestors through the
prophets. 2 And now in these final days, he has
spoken to us through his Son. God promised
everything to the Son as an inheritance, and
through the Son he created the universe. 3 The
Son radiates God’s own glory and expresses
the very character of God, and he sustains
everything by the mighty power of his command. When he had cleansed us from our
sins, he sat down in the place of honor at the
right hand of the majestic God in heaven. 4 This
shows that the Son is far greater than the angels, just as the name God gave him is greater
than their names.
“You are my Son.
Today I have become your
Father.*”
1:5a Or Today I reveal you as my Son. Ps 2:7. 1:5b 2 Sam 7:14.
1:6a Or firstborn. 1:6b Or when he again brings his supreme
Son [or firstborn Son] into the world, God will say. 1:6c Deut
32:43. 1:7 Ps 104:4 (Greek version). 1:8-9 Ps 45:6-7.
11:6 It is impossible to please God
without faith. Anyone who wants to
come to him must believe that God
exists and that he rewards those
who sincerely seek him.
13:2 Don’t forget to show hospitality
to strangers, for some who have done
this have entertained angels without
realizing it!
God also said,
1
The Son Is Greater Than the Angels
5 For God never said to any angel what he said
to Jesus:
sacrifice for sins, good for all time.
. . . For by that one offering he
forever made perfect those who are
being made holy.
“I will be his Father,
and he will be my Son.”*
6 And
when he brought his supreme* Son into
the world, God said,*
“Let all of God’s angels worship him.”*
7 Regarding
the angels, he says,
“He sends his angels like the winds,
his servants like flames of fire.”*
8 But
9
to the Son he says,
“Your throne, O God, endures forever and
ever.
You rule with a scepter of justice.
You love justice and hate evil.
Therefore, O God, your God has
anointed you,
pouring out the oil of joy on you more
than on anyone else.”*
10 He
also says to the Son,
“In the beginning, Lord, you laid the
foundation of the earth
and made the heavens with your hands.
