old question: How do followers of Christ fit into a pagan culture? While in Ephesus on
this third journey, Paul wrote this letter to the church in Corinth to respond to their
concerns.
Our age also is dominated by immorality, pagan practices, addiction to sports and
entertainment, and the worship of wealth and leisure. We, too, are at risk of taking our
eyes off Christ and allowing ourselves to be attracted to things that make God seem less
attractive.
What are the distinctions you can maintain as a Christian in your part of the world? If
you can’t think of many, you have probably already taken the first step toward compromise. Before long, you will fade unnoticed into pagan society, an ineffective witness for
Christ. The letter of 1 Corinthians will show you what lifestyle choices you need to make
to be effective as a Christian.
Key verses in 1 Corinthians
1:10 I appeal to you, dear brothers
and sisters, by the authority of our
Lord Jesus Christ, to live in harmony
with each other. Let there be no
divisions in the church. Rather, be
of one mind, united in thought and
purpose.
4:5 So don’t make judgments
about anyone ahead of time—
before the Lord returns. For he will
bring our darkest secrets to light
and will reveal our private motives.
Then God will give to each one
whatever praise is due.
6:18 -19 Run from sexual sin! . . .
Don’t you realize that your body is
the temple of the Holy Spirit, who
lives in you and was given to you
by God?
8:6 There is one God . . . by whom
all things were created . . . And
there is one Lord, Jesus Christ,
through whom all things were
created, and through whom
we live.
9:22 Yes, I try to find common
ground with everyone, doing
everything I can to save some.
12:4, 7 There are different kinds
of spiritual gifts, but the same
Spirit is the source of them all.
A spiritual gift is given to each
of us so we can help each other.
12:26 If one part suffers, all the
parts suffer with it, and if one
part is honored, all the parts are
glad.
Greetings from Paul
This letter is from Paul, chosen by the will
of God to be an apostle of Christ Jesus, and
from our brother Sosthenes.
2 I am writing to God’s church in Corinth,*
to you who have been called by God to be his
own holy people. He made you holy by means of
Christ Jesus,* just as he did for all people everywhere who call on the name of our Lord Jesus
Christ, their Lord and ours.
3 May God our Father and the Lord Jesus
Christ give you grace and peace.

Paul Gives Thanks to God
4 I always thank my God for you and for the
gracious gifts he has given you, now that you
belong to Christ Jesus. 5 Through him, God has
1:2a Corinth was the capital city of Achaia, the southern
region of the Greek peninsula. 1:2b Or because you belong to
Christ Jesus. 1:10 Greek brothers; also in 1:11, 26.
13:2 If I had the gift of prophecy,
and if I understood all of God’s
secret plans and possessed all
knowledge, and if I had such faith
that I could move mountains,
but didn’t love others, I would be
nothing.
15:3-4 Christ died for our sins,
just as the Scriptures said. He was
buried, and he was raised from the
dead on the third day, just as the
Scriptures said.
15:51-52 But let me reveal to you
a wonderful secret. We will not all
die, but we will all be transformed!
It will happen in a moment, in
the blink of an eye, when the last
trumpet is blown.
enriched your church in every way—with all of
your eloquent words and all of your knowledge.
6 This confirms that what I told you about Christ
is true. 7 Now you have every spiritual gift you
need as you eagerly wait for the return of our
Lord Jesus Christ. 8 He will keep you strong to
the end so that you will be free from all blame
on the day when our Lord Jesus Christ returns.
9 God will do this, for he is faithful to do what he
says, and he has invited you into partnership
with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
Divisions in the Church
10 I appeal to you, dear brothers and sisters,* by
the authority of our Lord Jesus Christ, to live in
harmony with each other. Let there be no divisions in the church. Rather, be of one mind,
united in thought and purpose. 11 For some
members of Chloe’s household have told me
