JOHN 18
page 973
I protected them by the power of the name you
gave me.* I guarded them so that not one was
lost, except the one headed for destruction, as
the Scriptures foretold.
13 “Now I am coming to you. I told them many
things while I was with them in this world so
they would be filled with my joy. 14 I have given
them your word. And the world hates them because they do not belong to the world, just as I
do not belong to the world. 15 I’m not asking you
to take them out of the world, but to keep them
safe from the evil one. 16 They do not belong to
this world any more than I do. 17 Make them holy
by your truth; teach them your word, which is
truth. 18 Just as you sent me into the world, I am
sending them into the world. 19 And I give myself
as a holy sacrifice for them so they can be made
holy by your truth.
20 “I am praying not only for these disciples
but also for all who will ever believe in me
through their message. 21 I pray that they will
all be one, just as you and I are one—as you are
in me, Father, and I am in you. And may they be
in us so that the world will believe you sent me.
22 “I have given them the glory you gave me,
so they may be one as we are one. 23 I am in them
and you are in me. May they experience such
perfect unity that the world will know that you
sent me and that you love them as much as you
love me. 24 Father, I want these whom you have
given me to be with me where I am. Then they
can see all the glory you gave me because you
loved me even before the world began!
25 “O righteous Father, the world doesn’t
know you, but I do; and these disciples know
you sent me. 26 I have revealed you to them, and
I will continue to do so. Then your love for me
will be in them, and I will be in them.”
Jesus Is Betrayed and Arrested
After saying these things, Jesus crossed
the Kidron Valley with his disciples and
entered a grove of olive trees. 2 Judas, the betrayer,
knew this place, because Jesus had often gone
there with his disciples. 3 The leading priests and
Pharisees had given Judas a contingent of Roman
soldiers and Temple guards to accompany him.
Now with blazing torches, lanterns, and weapons, they arrived at the olive grove.
4 Jesus fully realized all that was going to happen to him, so he stepped forward to meet them.
“Who are you looking for?” he asked.
5 “Jesus the Nazarene,”* they replied.
“I Am he,”* Jesus said. (Judas, who betrayed
him, was standing with them.) 6 As Jesus said
“I Am he,” they all drew back and fell to the

ground! 7 Once more he asked them, “Who are
you looking for?”
And again they replied, “Jesus the Nazarene.”
8 “I told you that I Am he,” Jesus said. “And
since I am the one you want, let these others
go.” 9 He did this to fulfill his own statement:
“I did not lose a single one of those you have
given me.”*
10 Then Simon Peter drew a sword and slashed
off the right ear of Malchus, the high priest’s
slave. 11 But Jesus said to Peter, “Put your sword
back into its sheath. Shall I not drink from the
cup of suffering the Father has given me?”
Jesus at the High Priest’s House
12 So the soldiers, their commanding officer, and
the Temple guards arrested Jesus and tied him
up. 13 First they took him to Annas, since he was
the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the high priest
at that time.* 14 Caiaphas was the one who had
told the other Jewish leaders, “It’s better that
one man should die for the people.”
Peter’s First Denial
15 Simon Peter followed Jesus, as did another
of the disciples. That other disciple was acquainted with the high priest, so he was allowed to enter the high priest’s courtyard with
Jesus. 16 Peter had to stay outside the gate. Then
the disciple who knew the high priest spoke to
the woman watching at the gate, and she let Peter in. 17 The woman asked Peter, “You’re not one
of that man’s disciples, are you?”
“No,” he said, “I am not.”
18 Because it was cold, the household servants and the guards had made a charcoal fire.
They stood around it, warming themselves, and
Peter stood with them, warming himself.
• Protection
JOHN 17:13-18
In his final hours, with the shadow of the
Cross looming before him, Jesus prays
that his disciples might be kept safe.
But Jesus is not thinking, as we might
be, of physical safety. He does not pray
that bad things won’t happen to his
friends—that they won’t be persecuted,
harassed, jailed, tortured, or killed. He
does not pray that they won’t go blind,
contract leprosy, or get into accidents. He
prays for their joy. He prays that they will
remain obedient. In short, he prays for
their spiritual safety, their holiness. Perhaps we should examine the content of
our prayers. Are we more focused on our
physical well-being or our spiritual health
and progress?
