HOW TO KNOW AND DO
WHAT IS RIGHT
Life is all about making choices. Here are tips to help you make
the right ones:
Pay attention to your conscience.
God gave all people a conscience—a sense of right and wrong.
When you have a feeling that something is wrong, that’s your
conscience at work. You can’t totally rely on your conscience,
however, since all humans make mistakes. You need to rely on
God, who never makes mistakes.
Seek God and his Word.
Your heavenly Father loves you and knows the right paths for
your life. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend
on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and
he will show you which path to take” (Proverbs 3:5-6; see also
Psalm 32:8; 143:10; James 4:17). One reason God has given
you the Bible is to help you make good choices. He also invites
you to pray anytime and talk over your choices. When you ask
God for help, commit yourself to obeying him: “O people, the
Lord has told you what is good, and this is what he requires
of you: to do what is right, to love mercy, and to walk humbly
with your God” (Micah 6:8).
Know Jesus, know truth.
Jesus is the source of truth and the only way to be totally
forgiven by God (see John 8:31-32; 14:6). When you trust Jesus
as your Savior, he works in your life through the Holy Spirit,
who lives inside of you and guides you to make good choices
(John 16:7-8). As you read the Bible, he will point out what you
need to do.
Get good advice.
God also works through the wise people he places in our lives:
godly parents, grandparents, or other trusted adults (like your
pastor or other church leaders). If you listen to them, they can
help you do the right thing. (See Proverbs 4; Ephesians 6:1-3;
Hebrews 13:17.)

Living for God involves all areas of your life. Let’s look at some
practical skills for living as God’s child.
HOW TO MAKE A REQUEST
God wants us to ask him for whatever we need. He often
meets our needs through people in our lives, such as parents or
teachers, and this means that we need to ask them, too. Here are
some tips for asking people for what you need:
Be bold. Ask God to give you courage to speak and the words to say.
Be polite. When you make eye contact and say “please” and
“thank you,” you show sincerity and respect for the other person.
Be clear. Explain what you need and why. Make sure that the
other person understands what you are asking.
listen carefully. Once you have made your request, listen
to the other person’s response without interrupting. If he or she
needs more time to think about it, be patient.
keep your emotions under control.
If the person says “no” to
your request, instead of getting angry or upset, politely ask why the
person turned you down. Then begin considering other options.
