Everybody agrees that Jesus was an incredible teacher. He
told great stories, he asked tough questions, and he was
unpredictable. Even the people who didn’t like him were
stunned and amazed at what he said. So what did he say?
Here’s a short list of his teachings:
Forgiveness—Our sin against God and others
is like a giant debt we can never, ever repay.
God’s forgiveness means that he has canceled
out that debt. Since we have been forgiven, we
should forgive others (Matthew 18:21-35).
Prayer—This is not a complicated ritual, just an
ongoing conversation with the God who loves to
be with us (Matthew 6:5-15).
God
— God is like a dad who feels heartbroken
when his kids run away from home and who
greets them ecstatically when they return to him
(Luke 15:11-32).
The Holy Spirit—He is a Comforter,
the Son of God
WHAT JESUS TAUGHT
The church
—This is the number-one building
project of the one who grew up as a carpenter’s
son (Matthew 16:18).
Counselor, and Guide (just like Jesus), except he
lives in us and gives us the power to live as we
were meant to live (John 14:15-31; 16:5-15).
Enemies—We should love them, pray for them,
forgive them, and go so far as to treat them like
friends (Matthew 5:38-48).
Divorce
—Marriage is meant to last a lifetime,
and it can and will if a husband and wife don’t
let their hearts get hard (Matthew 19:1-12).
Religion—We can be extremely religious and

your heart (Matthew 6:19-24).
moral and still be far from God. God wants
us to believe in him and trust him, not just do
“churchy” activities. He wants us to give him
our hearts (Matthew 15:8).
Hell
—Hell is real. Sadly, those who reject God
and his grace will end up in hell when they die,
apart from God forever (Matthew 10:28; 23:33).
