THE GOD WHO SEES
Thereafter, Hagar used another name to refer to the Lord,
who had spoken to her. She said, “You are the God who sees me.”
She also said, “Have I truly seen the One who sees me?”
G E N E S I S 16:13
She had been kicked beyond the proverbial curb to the hot desert sands
outside of town. Hagar, along with her son, Ishmael, found herself on the
wrong side of Sarah’s favor. They weren’t needed anymore since Sarah now
had her own son, Isaac, the one God promised Sarah so long ago. Without
a home and weak from wandering in a hot, barren wilderness, Hagar and
Ishmael lost all hope.
But God was with them. They just didn’t know it.
Though every human had forsaken them, God heard their cry for help.
He saw their pain and cared about their problem. Best of all, he didn’t simply
solve it—he opened Hagar’s eyes and showed himself to her. Even out in
no-man’s-land, she never walked alone. “You are the God who sees me,”
she cried.
And he is. So many people walk this planet hiding their private pain, alone
and despairing despite the crowds around them. But we have a God who
sees past our walls, deep into our hearts where we hurt the most, and he
cares. He sits with us in our silent sadness, encircling us in his everlasting
arms, collecting every tear in his bottle because they matter. We matter to
him. Let’s ask him to open our blind eyes and believe his promises.
