me and that you love them as much as
you love me. 24 Father, I want these whom
you have given me to be with me where
I am. Then they can see all the glory you
gave me because you loved me even before the world began!
25 “O righteous Father, the world
doesn’t know you, but I do; and these
disciples know you sent me. 26 I have revealed you to them, and I will continue
to do so. Then your love for me will be in
them, and I will be in them.”
JESUS IS BETRAYED AND ARRESTED
18
After saying these things, Jesus
crossed the Kidron Valley with
his disciples and entered a grove of
olive trees. 2 Judas, the betrayer, knew
this place, because Jesus had often
gone there with his disciples. 3 The leading priests and Phar
i
sees had given
Judas a contingent of Roman soldiers
and Temple guards to accompany him.
18:5a Or Jesus of Nazareth; also in 18:7. 18:5b Or “The
‘I Am’ is here”; or “I am the Lord”; Greek reads I am; also
in 18:6, 8. See Exod 3:14. 18:9 See John 6:39 and 17:12.
Now with blazing torches, lanterns, and
weapons, they arrived at the olive grove.
4 Jesus fully realized all that was going
to happen to him, so he stepped forward
to meet them. “Who are you looking
for?” he asked.
5 “Jesus the Nazarene,”* they replied.
“I Am he,”* Jesus said. (Judas, who betrayed him, was standing with them.) 6 As
Jesus said “I Am he,” they all drew back
and fell to the ground! 7 Once more he
asked them, “Who are you looking for?”
And again they replied, “Jesus the
Nazarene.”
8 “I told you that I Am he,” Jesus said.
“And since I am the one you want, let
these others go.” 9 He did this to fulfill his
own statement: “I did not lose a single
one of those you have given me.”*
10 Then Simon Peter drew a sword and
slashed off the right ear of Malchus, the
high priest’s slave. 11 But J esus said to Pe
ter, “Put your sword back into its sheath.
Shall I not drink from the cup of suffering
the Father has given me?”
WHO SAW JESUS AFTER HIS RESURRECTION?
The truth of Christianity rests heavily on the Resurrection. If Jesus rose from the grave,
who saw him? How trustworthy were the witnesses? Those who claimed to have seen
the risen Jesus went on to turn the world upside down. Most of them also died for
being followers of Christ. People rarely die for halfhearted belief. These are people
who saw Jesus risen from the grave:
Mary Magdalene
Mark 16:9-11; John 20:11-18
The other women at the tomb
Matthew 28:8-10
Peter in Jerusalem
Luke 24:34; 1 Corinthians 15:5
The two travelers on the road
Mark 16:12-13; Luke 24:13-35
Ten disciples behind closed doors
Luke 24:36-43; John 20:19-25
All the disciples, with Thomas
(excluding Judas Iscariot)
John 20:26-31; 1 Corinthians 15:5
Seven disciples while fishing
John 21:1-14
Eleven disciples on the mountain
Matthew 28:16-20
A crowd of more than 500
1 Corinthians 15:6
Jesus’ brother James
1 Corinthians 15:7
Those who watched Jesus ascend into
heaven
Luke 24:44-51; Acts 1:3-9
