From all-nighters to nights in, students need
a space that is dynamic and easily adjustable
for any occasion. It’s good to keep lots of
blankets and pillows on hand to create
makeshift seating for friends or a cozier
environment to promote successful studying
sessions. Lighting can also be key to creating
a warmer atmosphere. Stray away from big
lights and fill your area with a few lamps or
candles in key areas of the room to maintain
visibility but not blind your guests. Storage
ottomans are staple pieces to have in your
apartment, too. Ottomans are small footrestlike extensions to couches or chairs that can
secretly store items while providing seating
or style to your living area.
Another tip that Bouillon shared was to get
your friends and family involved. Do you
have an art major friend? Commission art
from them or get them to help you create
your own art. Is there unused furniture at
your parents’ house? Ask if you can have it.
Have a dad or uncle that’s good with tools?
Work with them to paint the walls, restore
old furniture, or pick out sturdy items that
will last. Refurbishing old or out-of-style
pieces is the perfect way to make an item
you’ll love while spending time with the
people you love.

Boullion advised against putting too
much stuff in your apartment. Crowding
and clutter won’t make an area feel like
home, it’ll only make it uncomfortable or
distressing. In most cases, less is more.
Instead, details like tall shelving or hanging
a mirror on the wall can open up a room
and make it feel bigger. In the end, it’s
important to think outside the box and find
what makes you the most comfortable when
decorating your new apartment.
