Since most apartments around Louisiana
State University’s campus are intended for
students, many complexes operate on a
one-year lease agreement. This means that
most students don’t stay in one place for
too long, so it’s important to know how
to decorate your space without making
permanent changes.
The first, and most important, tip that
Boullion gives to people is to plan first.
Every room is different and requires a
different atmosphere. The first thing
you should do when you get into your
apartment is measure. Measure the rooms,
the furniture and possible locations for
items you already have. Once you have
measurements, you can sketch layout ideas
or begin to buy pieces that will definitively
work in your area. Planning ahead will
also save you and your roommates from
potential disagreements.
The bedroom is the most important space,
said Boullion. This is where you should
spend the most time and money. Your
favorite color palettes, comfortable bedding
and seating, and pictures or art on your
walls can all help turn an empty space into
a place you enjoy being. In an apartment,
the bedroom is where you will spend most
of your time living, so it’s where you should
spend the most time preparing. Bookcases
and shelves are great additions for storage.
Rolling chairs can move around the room
or be tucked away to free up space. Warm
lighting, soft chairs, and a clean desk can
also provide the perfect place to study with
little distraction.
“If you feel good in the
space,” Boullion says,
“you can study better.”
