The Ethanol Papers - Paperturn manuscript - Flipbook - Page 517
this article, I made the challenge to Alex to debate the issue. I received a very
cordial and quick reply from him. In it, Alex wrote, "I have at least 3 debates
lined up already this year so whether I take additional ones will depend on how
prominent I can expect the debate to be..." There were a couple of other minor
requirements, like how much would he get paid, and he asked if I could refer
him to any of my work on the subject (in order to ascertain how prominent of an
opponent I might be). I sent him several links (all included below), and we have
touched base once since January 19th. Apparently, he's still processing the
material I sent because I haven't heard from him.
I don't expect that Alex will accept my challenge – undoubtedly, he'll find some
reason to discount me as being worthy of his effort. But the real reason he won't
accept the debate is that he'd lose, and then the career he built arguing that
fossil fuels are moral would be destroyed. Of course, I mention this in the hope
that it stirs him into action, but I still don't expect him to follow through. I will be
sending Alex and Kathleen a link to this story, and if they choose to respond I
will add their response below.
It is now seven months after I originally challenged Alex to a debate and corresponded with him. I have still not heard back from him, and have never heard
anything from Kathleen Hartnett White. It's probably safe to say that they feel
they are incapable of defending their (ridiculous) opinions. A third party - someone who had worked with Alex on another project - had tried to act as an intermediary to organize a debate and meet Alex's financial requirements, was not
able to coax Alex onto a stage with me. However, I'm not closing the doors to a
debate, I'd still love to do it.
NOTE: The page numbers referenced above relate to the Kindle e-book versions of Alex's and Kathleen's books. It is possible that other e-book versions
or hard copy versions have slightly different page numbering.
