Sarah’s Summer Sketchbook
High School
2016
2017
2018
After finishing my first year of high
school, I became more serious with my
artwork. I wanted to improve my Summer
Sketchbooks, so I created a collage for
my cover to represent my ideal summer;
this meant the entire book was a work of
art. By using an actual sketchbook for my
work, I created bigger illustrations with
various mediums, such as paint. Inside the
book, I forced myself to create artwork
that would fill the entire page; I spent
multiple days working on one page, which
added more pressure to complete the book
before the end of summer.
For my Summer Sketchbook of 2017, I had
decided to continue the collage cover, yet I
used different images from old magazines
around my house. In this high school series
of sketchbooks, I also included a title page,
a table of contents, and a page dedicated
to a quote. I ended up decorating each of
the pages to match a theme.
As I entered my senior year of high school,
part of me knew this would be my last
summer sketchbook due to my life getting
busier with working jobs and getting
ready for college. This book also became
my senior project, so all the work I created
was meant to be the absolute best. At
the end of my senior year, I presented my
work to my peers and teachers, making
an excellent way to complete my series of
six hundred drawings, and move on to the
next chapter in my life.
In this book, one can see improvements in
my art with my Emma Watson drawing. I
used the grid method and a face swap app
to see how far off I was from the reference
photo to create this specific work. This
pencil drawing ended up taking at least a
week to complete.

In the summer of 2017, I had lots of trips
planned, so much of my work reflects
what I experienced during my travels in
D.C. and Arizona. My book also contained
new mediums like chalk pastels on an eye
and gel crayons on a pattern page. This
sketchbook also holds a colored pencil
drawing of the Spiderman Homecoming
movie poster, where I used a buffing technique that created a glossy finish.
For my final summer sketchbook, most of
my work contained watercolor paintings. The paper in my sketchbook held
watercolors very well, so I became well
versed in the medium and created my
style by using black and white gel pens to
add definition and highlights to the work.
In the end, my collection of books has been
a great reminder of how much my art has
progressed in six years.
