The Moment I knew
E
veryone has a core memory of the
moment they knew what they wanted
to do with their life. Some people are
very practical with their lives; others know
what they want to do their yet can’t follow
their dream. As for me, I have always been
in love with art.

Art has always been a part
of my life, I remember
sitting in my grandfather’s den thinking of how
I wanted to be an artist
when I grew up. However,
in high school, I had to
start thinking about what I
wanted to do with my life,
where I would go to college, what I would major
in, and so much more. The
unknown has been my biggest fear, so this journey
beyond high school was
extremely daunting.
In early 2017 Donald Trump
was inaugurated President
and had used his power to
place a travel ban. Many
people were afraid of
what was to come with
his presidency, and this
stress lingered in my mind
later that day when I was
in One Word Café in Moscow, Idaho, with my family
listening to a close friend
perform with her band.
The music was folk, and I
reminisce whenever I hear
this genre. I guess I was in
the moment, and my mind
wandered into dreaming/
planning my future.
hand, but for some reason,
I never noticed this one
building till this night.
I went through different
scenarios in my head, If I
moved out and lived far
away for college or if I
would stay home. Then I
ventured into overthinking, which is quite normal
for me, and I wondered if I
would even have a future.
After I asked my question, I
looked around to see if my
question had been answered, and from where I
was sitting, as I looked out
the main front windows, I
saw the word “ART” lit up
on the building across the
street. It was attached to
an old marque that displayed information about
the church that currently
owned the building called
Nu Art.
With climate change and
Trump’s reign for four
years, I questioned if I
would even have a future.
Just before I was on the
verge of becoming too
overwhelmed, I stopped
myself and, in my head,
I asked the universe for
a sign. A sign of what I
should do with my lifewhat I should pursue in
college, anything to help
direct me to the right path
for my future.
Now I have been in this
coffee shop multiple times;
I grew up in this town; I
know it like the back of my
Although this story is very
cliché, at that moment,
when I began to panic, seeing the word art helped me
realize what I truly loved to
do and how I should embrace it instead of finding
something else to fill up
my life. So after receiving
a sign, I formed my plan to
carry my passion in my life
in college and adulthood.
