Sarah’s Summer Sketchbook
Middle School
2013
2014
2015
I had finally finished my first year of middle
in June of 2013. We had to clean out our
school lockers for the summer break and
I realized I had a unused Composition
Notebook at the very bottom hidden in
the dark. I’ve always had an obsession
with stationary and I couldn’t wait to fill
of the notebook when school started in
the fall, so I made up my own idea called;
Sarah’s Summer Sketchbook. I colored
the white dots on the marbled cover with
multiple-colored sharpies, and decorated
the name tag on the front, and a table of
contents on the back.
For my second SSB (Summer Sketchbook),
I went out of my way to get a Composition
Notebook since I didn’t have any leftovers
from the school year. I also wanted to
decorate it differently to show the distinction between the two books in years to
come. So instead of sharpie markers I used
patterned duct tape to cover the cover
and whiteout on top of the tape with little
marker doodles inside the blobs of things I
associated with summer.
The summer of 2015 I was transitioning
from middle school to high school. My
art changed from just colored pencils to
paints like acrylic. I decorated my cover
with stickers and puffy paint. But with my
jump in different mediums, I could tell my
time using a simple Composition Notebook
was limited. I ventured into very detailed
drawings like the Jurassic Park logo since
I watched the new movi, and added lots of
shading like in my third cupcake drawing.
After already completing a SSB I knew
what to expect, and how to prepare. After
creating my cover, I would sharpen all my
colored pencils by hand which gave my fingers blisters. Then I would put my colored
pencils in the purple travel containers so
I could bring my art supplies with me on
trips during the summer, and whenever I
had to swap parents. One can see my art
skills progress in this book specifically
with my drawing of the cartoon character
Blue from the movie Rio. Finally summer
ended and I had created over 200 pieces of
artwork within two years.
At the time I was very proud of these
works but was disappointed with the
notebook’s blue lines behind all of my
work. So when the summer ended I
decided I would change from a notebook
to an actual sketchbook, and this would
be the end of a fun summer project, and
the beginning of dedication to the craft,
and perfecting my skills. During the
summer I also created multiple copies of
popular logos such as Baskin Robins, and
Silverwood. By creating these drawings I
becaame more open minded to the world
of graphic design.
My idea was to document my summer
in all 100 pages of the book with my own
drawings. For the first day of summer, I
was stuck at home and had no idea what
to draw for it so I drew what I thought of
when I thought of summer which is a pool.
Throughout the summer I had drawn my
cats, restaurant logos, landscapes and
so much more. When summer ended, I
felt so productive and accomplished with
my work. And was so excited for my next
installment.
